Vegas baby Vegas

After a few days deciding I realised that i would be crazy not to go to NAB. It’s a legitimate business tax deductible expense so why not?

So am staying in the rather pokey MGM Grand, which has only about 4500 rooms, should get to know the other guests well then, not sure how far that is from the Convention centre, anyone know or are staying there?

I am coming for the whole week and I will be bringing my EX1 and Letus to do some shooting, mainly for myself. But perhaps there may be a little bit of paid work to do whilst there…who knows?

What I would love to do is to get together with some of the people who have contacted me over the past few months and go through with them what I have learnt and hopefully impart some advice on how to use these adaptors well. I may ask someone like Luis to bring a high quality HD monitor to show the results on. So if anyone is interested, let me know.

I will most likely shoot a couple of my little shorts whilst there, it would be a shame not to! So again, if anyone wants to tag along on one of those let me know

So who is going?

  1. Hi Philip

My wife and I will arrive in Vegas April 16, coming from a short stay in Death Valley. I would love to meet and assist you in any way I can. Let me know your details

Hi Dennis, Not sure I will be doing any shooting that late as I think I am going like the next day, but my cell is on my home page and am blackberry!

I hope you are taking a nice camera to death valley!!

Philp, You can take the monorail to the convention center, it a bit to far to walk, but the one walk is worth all the Vegas views. I usually stay at Ceasers Palace. Lots of lights in Vegas, visually it is stimulating and it goes all night long. 24×7. Just visiting each hotels lobby motif is a trip.

Will post some Vegas pics on the blog as well as last years NAB pics.

One of the big meetings is the Final Cut Pro users group meeting one night. See http://www.lafcpug.org/nab_2008 and its @ your hotel.

This is a must go to meeting, the folks from Apple show up and some other industry experts. The food sucks but what do you expect for $15.00, the meeting is always good.

So reserve this evening. In fact you should show your work for the group.

One of the big events this year is that Avid is NOT going to NAB this year.

    Bring comfortable shoes..

    Hi Philip,

My colleague and I plan on attending, and would love to meet you as well as be a part of the informational session you are so kindly offering to provide. I sent you and e-mail regarding this.

Thank you again for such inspiring work, beautiful as always!

    Peace and Blessings,

    Philip,

enjoy your stay in Vegas with the EX1 as your reliable companion. I just bought the camera yesterday and am still going over the specs.

If you do have some free time I would love to get your suggestions on what type of Picture Profile you think is best for night shooting outdoors in low light situations.

Matrix ( High Sat, Standard, Cinema etc, level, phase ,RG, RB, GR, GB, BR, BG)

Gamma,Black Gamma and so and so forth.

Thank you and have a great time in Vegas. Love your work. Very inspirational.

Have fun in Vegas Philip! Can’t wait to see what short you make from there! A word of caution…don’t try to shoot in any casino beyond the front lobby! Security will descend on you faster than you can think. A friend and I once tried to take a still of an empty craps table, wow, it wasn’t pretty!

A great shot of the strip is from across the bridge between the MGM and NY/NY. Cross over to the NY/NY side and there is a nice overlook with a great view of the city lights, no screen barrier in the way!

Also the trip to Hoover Dam is GREAT! if you have a car. Take the long way thru Sunrise Mt. and you’ll get great desert shots.

  8. Philip,
thanks for the PP settings for the EX1.I’m about to apply them.
By the way,Century Optics is coming out with a wide angle for the EX1 sometime in this month. Isn’t the lens on the EX1 wide enough on it’s own?

  9. No it’s not. A wide angle is essential for that added flexibility.

The new Sony .8x which is coming out very soon is actually really really good. Totally zoom through and in the UK it’s 300 quid.

  10. Hi philip,

Thanks for the email response regarding the lenses…just about to place my EX1 order.

If you’re interested in shooting anything off the strip, let me know. I live in Vegas and could arrange to take you out to Red Rock canyon, arguably the most beautiful scenery Vegas has to offer. I’ll be at NAB as well – I try and walk the show floor at least once every year.

    Cheers,
    Nathaniel

  11. Philip,

By the way you have probably heard that Apple won’t be there this year.
Check out the Paris hotel, it is very nice. Good food as well.
Good luck getting a taxi at the airport!!!!

  12. Hey Philip. I just came across your site today while researching the EX and some 35mm lens adapters and love the work that you do. I will be staying at the MGM as well. I arrive April 13th and leave the 17th so if you have some need for a person to tag along or just help a little on your shoots let me know. The NAB provides bus to and from the MGM but I am also buying a pass for the monorail because it drops and picks up right at the MGM and allows you to get around real easy and arrive and leave at any time of the day. Maybe I will see you there. Have a safe trip!

  13. Philip.
I am an adventure videographer, and staff video guy for Vail Resorts. I will be in Vegas for NAB, and will have my evenings free to assist in any project you will be shooting.
I may be sharing a room with my Base Jumping friends who will be jumping some “things” in town for the weekend, so may be an opportunity for you and me.
You can check out my site, http://www.rexlintproductions.com, or give me a call on my cell at 970.331.5419
I also have some training ops for you in colorado, with all kinds of back stage access to the rocky mountains of Colorado. April and may are good times to shoot.
Please Give me a call and we can chat.
