The GREAT East Coast NYC DSLR meet up! CONFIRMED as TIMES SQUARE

We had an awesome West Coast meet up last month but I am certain you East Coasters can easily beat the 140 or so who made it to Venice Beach. Confirmed as happening on Wednesday evening the 28th April. Being the timelapse addict that I am I am staying at the panoramic room at the Crowne Plaza Times Square, but we need to find a place where we can all hang out, check out each other’s bits, swap stories, shoot a bit then go eat and get drunk! Who is up for it!?

EDIT: Many locations have been suggested, but we are now confirmed for TIMES SQUARE! NOT WASHINGTON SQUARE PARK DUE TO CONSTRUCTION FACEBOOK GROUP FOR THIS EVENT HERE and Twitvite confirmation too so we can gauge numbers

Also if anyone is around the Phoenix/ Scottsdale AZ area I will be at Trader Vic’s at the Valley Ho hotel Weds evening from 8pm….all are welcome!!!

Here is a pic from the meet up at Venice Beach.

  1. Hey Phil, the DSLR craze is starting to take root here in the PHX filmmaking community. Would dig meeting you while you’re here, so Wed. is the night? I know there are a few other DPs that would be interested as well. Doing anything interesting while you’re here?

  2. NYC I’m in. Agree Bryant Park is excellent this time of year. Very Parisian. But Union Square and Washington Square parks also have their charms.

  3. Hey philip great work! Congratulations
i have a crazy idea… why dont we organize a workshop or dslr meet up here in Santiago de Chile, you will find a lot people using hdslr’s here, also great landscapes…places..etc

Please contact me if you’re interested…

    bye

  4. Phil – So exciting you are coming to Scottsdale! Thanks for hitting up our area. I met you in Venice. I will definitely be at Trader Vic’s Wednesday. Looking forward to it!

  5. Wow just made my day to learn of a possible meet up in Scottsdale. I’m sure I’m not the only one in the valley who has been wondering if one would ever make it here. Can’t wait. Will see all my fellow dslr users at Trader Vics on Wednesday.

  6. Unfortunately, I will be on Stage 8 of Broadway Stages the evening of April 28th. If you guys are going to be hanging out in the after hours, please don’t keep it a secret.

God knows I owe you several pints for turning me on to the Sony EX3.

  7. Hi Philip!

If you ever come to Norway (although not likely at the moment, even if you wanted to), please do a workshop! I’m constantly using my 7D for shooting skiing and school stuff, and I would love to learn more!

    Cheers;
    Anders, 16, Oslo

  8. very exciting, count me in, Philip, probably the best place to meet (100+ people)is Battery Park (view of statue of liberty) or the great lawn in central park. Someone suggested the Brooklyn bridge, don’t know, too many cyclists and tourists, too narrow and too much traffic for a big meet up.

  9. Looking forward to the nyc meetup. Caught your class in la, and i’m somewhere in the venice pic… So i’m planning to get in as many as possible Waldo style.

Also, Washington Square park has been recently touched up and would make a great location as there are lots of performers, much like Venice.

& timelapse wise I love east river park in Williamsburg, with view of the Wburg bridge as an alternative to the DUMBO shots of the Brooklyn bridge that are so popular. In east river park you can get right down to water level to shoot.

  10. OMG! Its like you read my mind! First I get ran over by Jay Z, Beyonce and Kate Hudson at Coachella while watching Thom Yorke and now I return and find my favorite video guy is here in town. (runs out to buy lotto ticket!)

Trader Vics on Wednesday with my Canon 7D. Check.

Do yourself a favor and check out the Camelview Theater over by where you are…a great indie movie theater to help you pass the time.

Hopefully this meet-up will be so epic that we can convince you to come back and teach a master class here in town.

Hope you feel better Phil. 🙂

  11. Oh wow….Tom Lowe is amazing….I can’t wait to see what magic he captures for his film about the Southwest. The Sonoran desert is so amazing. I hope you get some time to shoot while your here in town Phil. It would make my year to see a Bloom film filled with blooming cactus. lol ;P

I got some footage of Coachella on my ZS3…but I am certain that Tom with his sweet press pass, mad skills and pro camera got WAYYY better footage then me.

  12. I saw a guy (maybe Tom?) with a Red cam walking onto one of the stages and I tell my friend. Holy Shit…thats a Red cam…I have never even seen one live before. She looks at me and says…oh yeah (with a look in her eyes that says…big deal and shrug) I further try to explain why the camera is so cool…and why she should think it as cool to see as me…to no avail. Only when I tell her roughly how much they cost did it impress her. Sigh….I so look forward to geeking out with everyone!

    1. Philip, after all the help I have received from your Blog and videos I believe I can be of help with your laryngitis.

      Here goes:
This evening sip 1 liter of the finest Scotch the bar has.

Wednesday you will feel no need to utter a word. Your throat will begin healing!

Wednesday evening put a 1/2 to 3/4 full glass of the finest available scotch to your mouth while everyone is talking to you just nodding. Sip the Scotch 3 out of 4 nods. Be certain to maintain proper levels of glass of Scotch. This is Paramount to your success with this therapy! Remember: 1/2-3/4 full)

Thursday you will feel no need to utter a word. Your throat will really make leaps and bounds in healing!

I believe that you continue this therapy for a week… my research on this therapy suffered a ‘time lapse’ so I cannot be certain of the final stages.

After the 1st evening of therapy I vaguely remember someones suggestion that I have the address of my hotel I was staying in pinned to my shirt. Kind of a silly suggestion don’t you think?

Well there you go! Best of luck with your laryngitis

  13. Hi Phillip, can you talk about the AENY meeting this 29th, is nice to see you´re in covering such a nice events, my work is postproduction, animation and editing, now entering to the DSLR video field and your work has been truly inspirational, sadly i cannot be there i´m from Venezuela, good luck mate.

P.D: sorry for my bad english

  14. Hey there Philip,

Glad to hear you’re coming to NYC for a DSLR chat. When it comes to where to meet, the place you want to be is the Apple store in SOHO. They have a great theater with seating and a projection system, so we don’t have to worry about getting rained out in some park, and they do product demos on a daily basis. Most deal with Apple software, but they do allow third party software companies to show off their stuff, and have filmmakers giving presentations on a regular basis. And Apple has shown itself to be DSLR friendly here in NYC, as they put on a basic beginners workshop in their 5th Avenue store a few months back. Sorry I don’t have a contact for you there, but you definitely want to contact them. It’s THE PLACE to be for you.

  15. Can people who are not members of the user group attend Philip’s talk next week? I would hate for him to be speaking in Manhattan and not be able to attend.

  16. that pedestrian area in times square is a pretty good idea… and the only part of new york im really familar with. hoping to make it up. will check back to see if anythings confirmed.

  17. I would love to come for the the Manhattan meet up! Your site is very inspirational and educational for me. PS. What happens at a DSLR meetup? Has a location been selected?

Thanks for all of your hard work and generous sharing!

  18. Hey Philip

I’ll come by the event for sure. You should stop by our shop in Greenwich Village while you are in town. We would love to meet you, all the guys at AbelCineTech are big fans of your blog.

Time Square seems like a great idea, with the street shut down now there is plenty of space. That’s the first place I went when I bought my 5Dm2.
