NOW YOU CAN WIN A PRIZE TOO!! The Great London meet up!! Let’s make this the biggest and best one yet!

EDIT: All we can do is hope for good weather. If it is really crappy then we just have to find somewhere to grab cover…keep an eye on this blog and my twitter page for updates to locations if the heavens open up! If the rain is bad I suggest we go to nearby bar On Anon which is quite big and should be able to take us all!

Finally, I am doing one in London on Saturday August the 14th. But register your interest here!! We are going to meet at a very central location, Piccadilly Circus. Very touristy but it’s a space where security guards won’t kick us out and it has a nice synergy with the NYC Times Square Meet up also great to shoot! 5pm on August 14th.Let’s make it bigger than the LA and NY ones combined!!

The very exciting news it Captain Crane himself, Eric Kessler of Kessler Crane has donated a $500 voucher for use in his online store for the best film of the event. So bring your cameras and shoot something there, submit it to a group I will create on Vimeo and Eric alongside Canonfilmmakers.com’s Cristina Valdivieso and Jon Connor will judge the entrants. Adds a little spice to what is surely going to be the biggest and best meet up ever!

Let’s do some great timelapses, so bring your remotes! If not just bring your gear and hang out. I will bring my Kessler Crane Motorized Dolly with me.

OLD POST: First up on the 14th July in Manhattan is the NYC meet up part 2. The last one was brilliant, in Times Square. Different venue this time. We are going to meet at Brooklyn Bridge Park, nice views of the city and the bridge Let’s meet at 6pm.

Friday night the 16th July is the Boston one, in association with BCFPUG and tied in with my workshops there. Details here. Location soon to be announced.

  1. Sounds great!

But what about Germany? or Belgium?
    Düsseldorf? Brussels?

Am sure a lot of people would show up!

Love your passion for the craft and your blog + efforts building a community!

  2. Hey Phil!
Can’t wait to see you next wednesday!
May I suggest you do the meet up in central park? Its pretty big, but if you set a specific location in the park, it could turn out to be a swell plan!

  3. Finally London!!!!!!! Let us know all the details asap Philip!!!!!!
    Ps:can i ask for ur advise?would u choose 70-200 mk II or 85mm 1.2 II + 135mm f 2.0?????

  4. Sweet, NYC meet up sounds awesome. The Beer Garden in Queens might be a cool place to meet. It’s a huge space, both indoor and outdoor with a large variety of beer to choose from.

Either way, I can’t wait for the details cause I’d like to be there to talk camera talk.

  5. Don’t live in New York and won’t be there for meet-up unfortunately but what about Washington Square Park? It’s a little far from midtown but it’s nice and really would be a great place to hang out.

  6. A couple of suggestions for the NYC gathering:

Bryant Park, right around the corner from Times Square, is a great spot. A little less crowded, so folks can chat. And from 6 to 7, there’s free jazz! Great for those who want to show up early and give there Zoom’s and shotgun mic’s a workout.

The South Street Seaport is a decent location. Plenty of food, booze available, indoors in case of bad weather, and the best view of the Brooklyn Bridge in the city. A bit touristy, but then again, our last gathering was Times Square, and nothing is more touristy than that.

  7. The photo of the NYC location you posted is not Brooklyn Bridge Park, the photo is from Empire Fulton Ferry State Park–both are on the Brooklyn side of the river, but Empire Fulton Ferry State Park is on one side of the bridge, and Brooklyn Bridge Park is on the other side.

Both have great views of the city, but if you want the view from the photo you posted, you want Empire Fulton Ferry State Park.

  8. Interested in London meet up how long is it likely to last as I live in South Wales so either need to make last train/bus or book somewhere to stay

  9. Great you’re coming to Brooklyn! Brooklyn Bridge Park is an excellent choice. The park is pretty big so it would be good to have a specific meeting place… I suggest somewhere near the bar located at Pier 1 at the foot of Old Fulton Street corner Furman Street. For all those coming from Manhattan and other locations take the A or C train and get off at the High Street stop (first stop in Brooklyn)… head down a few blocks towards the bridge and the East river. The park and Pier 1 are just to the left of the bridge.

  10. It’s going to be a challenge for me to get there. There are still a few things to arrange. But I really hope I can make it to London on August 14th.

I’m trying to get an early flight from Amsterdam to London. (Any suggestions on which airport is the closest?), book a night in a nearby hotel and get a flight back to Amsterdam on Sunday.

Shit I might take a tent and park myself in the middle of the Queens garden (Hoping they won’t shoot me. All I have to shoot back is a couple of Canon lenses).

And then there is that T-Shirt….

  11. Excellent news on the London meet. I’m going to the Empire Movie-Con at the BFI Southbank during the day so will be a great way to end the day and only a short walk along the river!

My only issue is what to do with all my equipment as cameras are not permitted at Movie-Con… I;m sure i’ll work something out though.

Lastly, where can we register our interest? There’s no link in the post.

  12. Hi Phil.
We are Newbies in the 5d world, but would love to come along to the London wkshp. Please count us for 2 places.
    Regards
    Scott & Patrice

  13. Hi Philip

Might be able to make it to the London meet up now woo hoo…but I’ll be with my bro and my girl, so are non camera people welcome? haha

non camera question… you a Taco Bell fan? the Taco Bell in Lakeside Mall London is now open!

(just thought i’d post that in case you were, i still remember when they had one in london back in the 90’s)

  14. if you want to do great timelapses of the london eye with best sight and little stress, visitors who meet up august 14 could rent a hotel room at one of the upper floors of the “royal horseguards” hotel at the opposite side of river thames. i did one last year which you can see here: http://vimeo.com/13635997

  15. What a bummer!

That’s right in the European vacation zone of the last three weeks in August….otherwise I’d have Eurostarred it over from Brussels. I’ll have my DSLR and remote in the south west of France on a beach! I’ll join you in spirit.

Any plans on a Central European Meet Up in say – Amsterdam/Brussels/Paris later in the year?

  16. Damm you bloom just booked to go to the red bull x fighters at Battersea power station and guess when it starts….. 5 pm…. And I live in London, when you eventually come here I cant go ….. Damm your aperture settings and may your focal lengths be large (not sure if that one’s bad)……may your viewfinders fog up and those cats of yours poo in your primes….

Sorry about that everyone….lost it a bit there …. Great news Phillip hope everyone has a great time.

…I’ll get you bloom…. I’m going to team up with german bloke and send some money to that Gillimott geezer in the good old USA to re-open hostilies….. Together we can TAKE OVER THE W………I’ve got the whole world in my hands, I’ve got the whole world……………

  17. I’ll be there.

Not 100% convinced about the location though – it’s a pretty small place ’round Eros and usually crawling with tourists.

Shame the Trafalgar square photography regulations are so fascistic. Victoria embankment might have more space and less hassle.

  18. Philip,
as your big fan, i was hoping to find opportunity to meet you somewhere or attend your course .. now you are coming somewhere most near to my country ( UAE-Dubai) … now i think this is closet place possible to me ..

I will arrange to meet up in london ..

  19. I am in London right now 7-27-2010 and just found out you are going to have a meet in just a few weeks hear in London, sadly I am leaving in 2 days and will not be hear for the meet. This happen to me in the New York meet but then I was 2 days to late. Sorry to hear you are home sick Philip, If you want me to mail you something from Harrods let me know I will be their tomorrow. Hope you all have a great time at the London meet up. Cheers

  20. Agree with AndyB on the location point.
I’m shure that Phillip well thought about this change
Embankment would also be nice, maybe we can go there from Picadily ?

    PS:
The good thing of Piccadilly is we can have some nice Asian food in Soho after the shoot 🙂

Any how, looking forward the 14TH.

      1. Okey dokey!

But just to be clear I need only my cat and to be social. Not a tripod, plenty of memory on my cf, certain type of lense…?

        Looking forward to it. 🙂

  21. Bloody hell. (Is that correct to say here?)

This Yankee will be arriving in London about 18 hours too late for this.

I hope it is a great meet up nonetheless!

  22. I’ll be in London that weekend so I’ll come over and join in. I bought a 550D a few weeks ago and I’m looking forward to soaking up some of the knowledge you guys have.

  23. awesome! i am going to be in london 13-14-15th. hah! thats so random! just going there on vacation, do some sightseeing and stuff with my girlfriend. this will make my trip.. nono this will make my year! cya in london. greetings from sweden!

  24. Hi Philip,

It’s very kind of you holding this on my birthday! Hope to meet you and everyone next Saturday. Looking forward to it and my birthday.

    BR, James

P.S Did I mention it was my birthday on the 14th?

  25. Will be there, and bringing at least one other person with me. Always been curious as to these meet ups, so thanks for doing one on this side of the pond. Looking forward to it

  26. I can’t wait for this event. I’m pretty new to this whole DSLR filming, but these sort of event’s can be a great way of kick starting something special. I do hope I get a chance to meet Mr Bloom, and meet some great people in London.

I’ve only just recently got my 550d and i’m scrambling to get some equipment ready in time, but i’ll try my damned hardest.

Are tripods aloud in London? and does it really matter if I don’t have a Zacuto Z-Finder?

Anyway, i’ll see you all on the 14th Aug. I’m SO excited!

  27. This sounds pretty exciting and good timing too! I have been saving up for a dslr for months now and I should be able to get my first one on Friday 14th, the day before this event. I’m getting a Canon 550d, so this meet up should help me start getting some nice video and images. I am 17, so this should be a great opportunity. Thanks Philip! 😀 Hope I see you there!

  28. As Luke would say upon entering the Rebel briefing room to shut down the energy field protecting the new Death Star located on the forest moon of Endor as Han is looking for his stolen Imperial shuttle crew to go down there and do it….phew.

    I’m with you too

    🙂

  29. Hey Count me in on that event….
i’m in Paris and i’m a big fan of your work and love to exchange on your experiences…i’ll get a train ticket to London.
    Hope it’s still okay?
    take care

  30. Coming with someone for the meet-up. A Japanese cinematographer friend. We’ll both be armed and ready to shoot.

Is it still all cameras welcome, or just DSLR’s? we would be with DSLRs but just curious, in case anyone else I knew was interested. Thanks, and see you there.

              1. Was good to my word!
And you deserved it too. Thanks for a fun evening and a chance to break out my Camera. Now I’ve experienced what one of these Camera meet ups is like (though I think I was a bit shy on the whole socialising front, hehe. Will do better next time) The sun came out just for the meetup, how good was that?
                Enjoy, and thanks again

  31. I’ve been waiting for this London meet-up for ages and now that it’s finally happening I’m in LA and can’t make it! Alas, have a great time and I’ll be there for the next one.

  32. I’m really excited about it!
I just hope not to rain! Would be so cool to make some fotage outdoors….

But its kind of wierd, I’m living two years in London and I never heard of some like this… Usualy people from this industry always stay on their own group and never mix with others, even more in a meeting just for fun without any special reason…. This is really good to be happening… I’m from Brazil and the people in there, from the industry are the same, never would be “mixing” with normal “people”…

So, thumbs up for Philip, great iniciative! The meeting didn’t happen yet but I’m already hoping for more!

  33. Great meet up today! Got some sweet pictures that i’ll put online with a link at some point. Didn’t get a chance to speak to you Phil but I had a message from Alec McSimpson from D&A films, he asked me to tell you that he was there but had to dash before you arrived! there we go, message delivered, weight off my mind!
    o.

  34. Hey Big Phil, what a pleasant, down to Earth and real chap you are, you gave time for everyone, no BS, so much camera love from all who turned up and the heavens even stopped for us.

Good to see and feel so much passionate enthusiasm, reminded me of when me and my dad used to go to super8 clubs in the 70’s/ early 80s, that was the last time you saw this kind of camaraderie between amateur and professional, funny how circles come again.

Hope you enjoyed your Wagamamas, I know I did. Good people, great time, look forward to the next.

    Anil 🙂
