criticsWEBbanner468x60v2Yes it’s here. A little bit late. Much CGI work was needed on Steve. Both ILM and WETA worked 24/7 for 2 weeks but the results are astounding!

Enjoy!

EDIT: There are a couple of corrections to be made. First off the first video was directed by Mihnea de Vries and shot on the Sony Cinealta F900 not the HVX 200 as was originally mentioned on the vimeo information. Apologies for that.

Here is the blurb from Zacuto (campy start!?)

[ critics ] round 4 begins with a campy start as dueling hosts Steve Weiss + Philip Bloom critique two future world music videos and quickly move onto an Urban Nature film. Next, a skilled shooter + extreme skier with a Canon 5DMKII creates, “Some of the best skiing footage I’ve ever seen.” The best part, Steve gets a beginning, a middle, and a happy ending. [ critics ] offering an eclectic mix of personalities, perspectives and laughter.

About [ critics ]: Film/video veterans, Steve Weiss, Director of FilmFellas/Critics, and Philip Bloom, a London based Independent DP and Director (philipbloom.co.uk/) come together as dueling co-hosts to candidly critique web based video content. 1. Woohoo Pow Mow is on!

I love that you and Steve went through exactly the same set of realisations as I did when I first saw it.

I had just bought my 5D and I would not have taken it out in drizzle without a full waterproof housing and I just couldn’t believe what Ian and Neil were doing with theirs and I still can’t believe how they were doing it. Its been on my iPhone ever since.

  2. Awesome watch, first time ive watched an episode.
Love the banter between the two of you / what interests each of you guys individually in the pieces.

I , like Phil have a particular interest in the behind the scenes stuff – so would be cool to maybe get a bit more info behind the clips themselves in terms of technical / shoot details etc ( perhaps some stills or little details sent in by the author to you guys )

great variety of clips as well – keep it up!

also Phil – where you mixing an apple martini with a coffee or what? hah

  3. I am enjoying your interaction with Steve. It adds a lot compared to a Siskel and Ebert review.

Thanks for providing the links; It saved me a lot of time searching compared to previous webisodes. Whats up with the private 6803383?

    1. I assume you are joking! Just a bit of fun! Last week featured my short Homeless Portraits shot on an HVX200! I was an owner for a year. I was surprised that the video was shot on an HVX knowing its resolution. Just found out it was actually shot on HDCAM. But I do think people generally need to be less precious about cameras. I camera is a camera and it is just a tool. It’s what you do with it that matters. I won’t get upset if you diss the 5d, 7d, ex1, f350, ex3, hvx, hpx, RED, HDCAM, Varicam etc…go for it!! All personal opinions and everyone is entitled to theirs!!

      1. Yeah, just kidding Philip! Still a bit over protective about my new sweethart.. I wouldn’t be able to stop being a fan anyway, your a big inspiration.

  4. Sorry to be upset and harsh but:
I thought the show was called critics and not lickits….Too bad there’s no critique on the first 2 awfull music videos that do deserve more critique than just a compliment on the greenscreen. I thought both first music videos were cheesy, ugly lighting and unoriginal concepts. Sure those were not just in the episode because steve wanted to promote his friend?
Also a little hard on HVX users by calling the cam crappy..?
Sorry, but just had to post this in resistance of the positive comments only posted here.

    1. being negative because everyone else is positive? That’s silly!!

Yeah the music videos looked nice but not really by cup of tea. Am sure I said so but it must have been cut out by Steve!

Sorry to the HVX. I love you really. I must stop being so harsh on my exes!

      1. Thanks for explaining, no harm done at all. Just joking and wanted to hear u guys discuss more those 2 video’s, like you did for the urban nature video.
Looking forward to 7D cinematography DVD!
