Come to the Canon Expo in NY! Canon 60D coming soon…and the 1DS mkiv?

Lots of rumours (note the u in the spelling my American friends 😉 ) for absolutely ages on this one. It’s a replacement for the the 50D and will sit between the T2i/ 550D and the 7D. Got proper controls on it like the 7D, as in two dials…nice.

Chatter about improved video functions such as moire reduction are all unconfirmed but hey, wouldn’t it be awesome if it did! Articulating screen looks likely from the sneaky photos shown below…I am certain we will hear more soon…especially with big events like the Canon Expo in New York coming up (which I will be at, hope to see you there!) and Photokina.

The Canon Expo is entry by request only click on the above link and register. It’s purely down to numbers so register now! Great speakers as you can see below!

We are hearing all sorts of rumours about the 1Ds mkiV. RAW recoding being the big one (some of you may remember my April 1st blog!)...again, let us see what happens! The market is moving fast…Nikon and Sony are coming out with better DSLRs with video and of course there are video cameras coming out with large sensors too.

Exciting times!

  1. Yeah, the 5DmkIII is what I am waiting for also. Although I guess the longer it is before that is released, the better it will be. I can wait. Unless one of these other companies release something with a global shutter.

  2. RAW video mode (for the 1D) would be incredible – as well as a faster CMOS chip. Even if the camera gave you a better video capture than 4:1:1 (or 4:2:0 for our British friends 🙂 that would be great.

Personally the I haven’t run into issues with the current codec, but I have with rolling-shutter which makes it impossible to stabilize footage in post.

  3. Well, seeing that I just bought a 5D Mark II a week ago, the last thing I want to hear about is a Mark III coming soon 🙂

Well at least I’ll get to play for the time being if something is announced… And coming from the commecial/editorial photography world I need the practice in shooting before I start worrying about new camera features.

  4. Is it just me or does anyone else feel that the monthly upgrades in technology are annoying? It use to take years for new technology to take the place of old technology…now it can take months or sometimes weeks. Where does it end? It has to plateau somewhere, right? We’ll all go broke trying to keep up. Maybe that’s the idea?

    1. What’s the alternative — for manufacturers to sit on new ideas, hoping they don’t get beat to the punch by the competitors? You don’t HAVE to buy it, of course, but when you are ready to purchase you will be glad for every improvement that has happened since you got your last new camera.

Also, unless we break them, our old cameras are still JUST AS GOOD as they were when we bought them (the 5DMkII is better, after the firmware upgrade), regardless of what else comes out. My old D30 (NOT 30d) still takes as good a photo (all 3 megagpixels of it) as it did when I bought it new in 2001 for $3500! So the release of a 5DMkIII won’t make the MkII any less of a camera. Of course I will still want one…

Keep the new ideas and products coming, please!!

      1. I don’t have a problem with innovation…just the fact that the latest, greatest innovations are deemed antiquated in 6 months.
Just when you decide to jump on the bandwagon of the “next great thing,” another bandwagon goes speeding by you.

I personally think that there has to be a leveling off from this crazy pace. At some point the innovations become less and less meaningful. It’s building towards an exponential fall off. It’s kind of like the SPF numbers in sun block lotion…at a certain point, the changes in the spf numbers starts to mean less and less. (100 SPF is not twice as good as 50 SPF).

That’s my hope anyway…otherwise we all spend our time and money chasing the “dragon” haha.

        1. As said before : just cos a new camera comes out doesn’t make our current cameras outdated all of a sudden.

Ask yourself if you apply the same reasoning to lenses : does the release of a brand new lens with autofocus and better optics suddenly turn our older Canon, Vivitar or Zeiss lens obsolete ?

    1. I heard the Photographer Tom TIll talk about a “35mp camera from Canon”, a couple of months ago. I don’t know if he just spoke of a rumor or if he actually had some inside knowledge…

  5. Hoping to hear some exciting news from this canon expo, for sure. I’m picking up a 550d soon (or should I buy the 60d instead?) to play around with / use for school right now, and holding off on buying a 5d until the mk3 comes out.

Various rumor sites (I know, not too credible) are saying it could come out next fall… so here’s to hoping I can get by with a smaller sensor until then!

Also, how soon after it comes out will we get a mk3 training vid? 😉
