More pics of EX3 Letus Relay

I did my first shoot today for Documovie and Philips. I shot it on the EX3/ Letus Ultimate and for the first time (I believe) on a commercial project, the EX3 1/2″ relay. It performed REALLY well. It was like operating a 35mm camera for the first time. No fiddly focus or zoom to worry about, just the 35mm Lens, and the secondary iris control on the relay.

I will be doing a full review in the coming week but just for now here are some of my pics of the set up on my ever lovely Zacuto rails and follow focus…

This is not the compact or the pro B4 relay. This is a separate product altogether. It should also work on the XDCAM f330, f350, f355 and f335. I will tell you for sure tomorrow!

  1. Hi Philip. posted already on the wrong thread on DVXuser.
You probably didn’t try, but from the pictures, It looks like you can proper balance that rig on the shoulder and still use original viewfinder (just adding some rear weight). But then I don’t know the EX3 screen and if you can look into it so close (I suppose EX3 lcd flip open works like “old” beta viewfinders when flip open). Cheers.

  2. Philip, I’ve only been a reader/follower for a couple weeks now, but came across your site while researching just this option for my EX3. Any idea when the release is scheduled for? I don’t see it on their website yet, only the B4. By the way, I really appreciate the reviews…keep on keepin’ on! Can’t wait to see footage and hear the details.

  3. by the way i had the z riser the wrong way round on this shoot. you will see the correct position on the zacuto website and my full blog entry on this shoot when I get the OK from Philips and Documovie to show it.

  4. One hell of a rig … beautiful … just beautiful. I wonder if there is a way to snorkel that baby up to the SGBlade. You did say, it would take some modification but I might just get this and try … where there is a will there is a way!

  5. Lovely setup! Is there anywhere decent in the UK to get the Zacuto baseplates? I had a quick look on the web but could only find prices higher in £ than in $!!! Is it worth a shopping trip to NY (pretend it’s for the MRS) to pick up a rig over there?

  6. Love the blog and all the great info. I have a probably a newbie question to ask.

I have all the canon primes and starting to do more video along with the stills after years of only doing stills. Thanks to the 5D in part.

I have an ex3 and a 5d. At the moment when it has to look like film I obviously use the 5d. I realize many of the limitations with the 5d which is why I also have the ex3.

Is it really prudent to look into investing another 7-8k into making the ex3 a great film machine or is it more wise to stick with the 5d and wait for the next option? Canon will surely release a replacement for the 1Dmk3 just before the Olympics. Who knows what it may have but obviously with the 7d etc. they realize it needs to be 24p and have better audio.

I just don’t want to have 15k plus invested in a device if I really won’t need it in a year.

Probably much of the same stuff on everyone’s mind but would greatly appreciate your thoughts!

    Thanks,

    Michael

    1. Hi Michael

Yes you can easily make the ex3 into something more filmic with an adaptor and you don’t need to spend as much as that. There are many people selling adaptors 2nd hand off of ebay. But it’s a very different beast to a 5dmkII.
