I have teamed up with the best Video hosting and community site there is, Vimeo to produce a series of video tutorials to get you through the basics of shooting video with DSLRs. My series is for the real beginner. It’s part of the new “Vimeo Video School” which is going to teach you how to make better videos. It’s an awesome resource that covers a huge amount of topics including the following:
Topics that I cover in my first series are cover the important basics, from choosing the right camera, lenses, accessories to setting up the camera, recording sound and more. You can see them all on the Vimeo Film School Page, by going to my EDUCATION section of this website or by clicking the appropriate lesson below! They are done in a lighthearted fun way. I hope you enjoy them! Don’t forget there are loads more in depth tutorials on my Education part of my site and for more in depth learning try the F-Stop Academy training videos…link below!

awesome!
thanks alot philip!
One word.. Brilliant!
Very comprehensive and soaked up every bit of information. I believe your the only man for the job. Meeting you in London at your first UK meet up was an amazing thing, but there wasn’t really enough time to ask you a lot of my questions. However, you’ve answered mostly all of them in these incredible videos. I Cannot wait for more!
Thank you Mr Bloom and Andrea Allen
I wish you, and the Vimeo team a very Merry Christmas!!
Samuel 😉
Fantastic idea – hat’s off to Vimeo for providing such a great service / resource + making it a bit fun , adding some spice.
First series? are more planned? will give all these a watch very soon – again Vimeo are continually impressing me – keep up the great work. I hope Blake W rewarded you generously after the time you put into these! 😀
Many thanks as always Philip, a huge resource for aspiring filmmakers like myself. Here’s hoping for more!
Great job, Philip. I really enjoyed these videos. I have to be humble and say I learned a lot! I have a 7D, so it was perfect. You guys really funny as well. I’m really looking forward to your upcoming blog on LENSES. Can’t wait. Keep up the great work.
Great vids.
But why the GH2 neglect?
You spoil us. What a giver you are. Sensei, sifu, teacher; it makes such a difference to us little people starting out who just want to do great work. Not just get through a shoot: attack it, seduce it, serve it. Then go get a cold one! Cheers Sir, Michael Locke
well done,
a great example of “cutting a long story short”
by the the way, have you ever think of a acting carreer Mr Bloom?
i’m a fan of your humour, good laugh everytime.
merci
This is great, thank you so much Mr. Bloom!
You’ve been a busy boy! Can we add this to our CV?
Hiya Just about to watch these. Did a lot of research in the past few years on an alternative to 35mm and finally stumbled on DSLRs. Thanks Mr Bloom for such an informative site. It was very helpful in my research. I finally got a 5D and donated it for a production to GMAC which is a Scottish Social Enterprise which facilitates filmmakers in Scoltand and has won numerous Baftas previously. They movie looks superb and watching it yesterday it brought a lump of emotions in my throat, the search was finally over, for a while anyway. GMAC are getting a 5D with accessories now for the company as well. So thank you for your part in the DSLR revolution 🙂
Now I am starting the first video of the lot.

Excelent! Very funny way made videos but still very use full!
How does this affect your Fstop academy sales?
This is true basic basics. The F-Stop Videos going into much more depth.
Why are ISO 125, 250, 500 and 1000 bad ISOs? That doesn’t seem to make sense to me. ISO 125 by and large is not noisy. At least not in still photography. Is this some video specific thing I’m missing?
One of the best cameras for shooting video on the market, the Panasonic GH2 gets neglected?! Some test.
er this is not a test and you should know i love my GH2s, used them on loads of shoots.
I’m not questioning you, I’m questioning them. I’m going to put this on their site.
i dont understand…what are you questioning and why are you upset?
Why would they exclude the camera given its and the GH1’s rep?
you are implying some sort of conspiracy!! why? we mention it and the basics are the same across all the cameras!
