February 27, 2009 at 15:58I’m wondering given that it does employ CMOS chips, if we’ll the see the same rolling shutter problems that have plagued the EX1/3? Did you test for that? Otherwise, great review. Thanks!

March 1, 2009 at 03:04Excellent review! Wondering if 35mm adaptor was used on Panny shots, or if you zoomed in with stock lens. Also, how much of a factor is quality degradation from use of Hien’s relay+Ultimate? Neglible, discernable? Thx!

March 1, 2009 at 13:24Hi Steven, I mostly zoomed in or used macro, no adaptor was used for the panny shots. I used the SGBlade and EX1 for the pretties of the camera itself. The relay when used with the ex3 has no quality degradation. It just looks different,.

May 8, 2009 at 14:49Hey Philip,
Enjoy your work and reviews. I know that you are resisting direct comparisons between the EX-3 and HPX-300/301e, but which one performs better in low light.
Thanks!

May 10, 2009 at 12:13Hi Philip,
Love the review. Very nice camera. It would be really good to know how you think it compares to the EX3? It’s a hard question to answer I guess but it terms of outright versatility which do you think is the more flexible camera if you want to buy one main camera. Does the 1/2″ chip in the EX3 deliver a superior image in the end?

May 11, 2009 at 04:31the ex3 still gives you a superior image, less skew, almost no noise and better in low light

May 11, 2009 at 11:36Ah well that says it all really. Thanks for the reply. And you can still record better codecs with the EX3 if required using the HD-SDI out and something like the AJA Ki Pro or Convergent Design Nano Flash.
Thanks again, this is really useful and good for my wallet too.

May 11, 2009 at 23:19No worries..I hope firmware updates can improve the sensor wobble on the 300…love it other than that!

May 10, 2009 at 12:45Ooops just read your answer to the same question on Exposure room… In answer to your question to the other guy, I want to shoot stock, corporates and commercial/viral work for the internet. Also it would be my only camera (apart from my 5d mk2). My feeling about the HPX-301 is that it has more of what I may need in one machine without attaching anything and the Codec would appear to be better for stock footage. Size is the only issue having said that I’m not sure that once the EX3 is packed in a bag it’s that much smaller really as it’s a funny shape. I have plenty of time to make the choice however.
My main requirement for the camera is stock however.

May 11, 2009 at 04:31my main concerns with 300 is the noise levels and the sensor wobble…it’s a really nice camera with flaws…

June 16, 2009 at 08:53Thanks for the review Philip. Couple of questions:
Were you still seeing noise at minus gain settings?
The DOF seems shallower than I would have expected with the stock lens, were you at the end of the tele and wide open? Even some of the wider shots looked like they had some DOF!

June 16, 2009 at 09:49just by using the end of the lens or the macro. Yes there is a lot of noise with this camera. -3db doesn’t take away noise, the best way to reduce noise is using the picture profile settings within the camera. I don’t have one so I cannot advise but I would check out dvxuser.net
