  • Another quick question RE: Teleseminar-replay.mp3

    You mentioned Picture profiles…

Where can I find out the best picture profile for a Z1 to achieve the ‘film look’

Again, if I could please re-direct you to my short film ’5 Bricks High’, I shot it out of the box, I still (to the day) have never used a picture profile.

I sort of don’t feel qualified enough to go poking about with things like this ;(

  • Bloom,

Do you keep a filter on the end of your lenses at all time for protection?

    Thanks,
    Daniel

    • no. Most of time, but take them off when I get flare or use fader ND

      • Hey Philip!

I love this site and your work. I have been doing a lot of reading about lens protectors/UV filters lately and am about to purchase a Fader ND. To piggy back off the question above, do you keep a lens protector on your Fader ND at all?

        Thanks,
        Matt

  • Hi Philip,

Ere’ my good man, are Canon gonna solve this 25 f/s/p issue out in the 5d MKII?

That’s one of the things that’s stopping me getting one?

    thanks
    Cheeser

  • Hi Philip..

Am looking into getting a Canon 5D mkll for my expeditions.. Am planning on cycling around the world, walking New Zealand, climbing Mount McKinley..

    More info here.. http://www.leehughes.co.uk

I have a canon 400d at the mo but am going to sell that and dip into savings for the 5D. Am looking to make a film/documentary out of this trip using stuff like time lapse etc..

I have limited space on my bike and it needs to be able to take a knock.. what lenses would YOU take if you where in my position? Might be able to take 3 depending on size etc

    Cheers..

    • Changed my mind to a 7D due to price :)

Enjoying you vids and site :)

  • Hi Philip,

Great site….lots of good info. Do you use your Canon 70-200mm on your Letus35? I was told that the Image Stabilization feature of the lens is normally powered by the camera body, so that feature has to be turned off when using the lens with an adapter. So everything is just manual mode when you use that zoom with the adapter, correct?

    Thanks,

    RB

  • Hi Philip,

Thanks for the great site it answers a whole lot of questions!
(my girlfriend get’s quiet annoyed as i keep interrupting her while she’s reading to go “oooo he says that…”)

I just wanted you opinion of what lens i should buy. Im thinking of getting the 7D….. i dont really have the budget for a 5d AND new lenses as ive had a 450D and bought new ones for it.

To get similar results as your ‘people’ videos what lens would be best for the 7D, i dont really have the budget for the Canon 35mm f1.4 that you use as the L series are a little pricy..

I just want a really good quality video/stills camera for hobby use and i think the 7d wipes the floor with our Z1′s we use at the moment any way!

Thanks for your time :o )

  • Hi, Philip, thanks for taking the time to share your expertise! I have a Sony UWP-V1 and I am getting some really harsh sibilance with it. I tried moving the mic far away from the talent’s face, but it still happened. It was essentially distorting the mic, no matter what volume i put the input at. Have you ever experienced this? If so, what was your solution? Thank you so much! Kyle

  • Mr Bloom!

If you answer only one of my question’s please make it this one! q;P

Cool news about the 24/25 fps update for the 5D MKII… I could be very tempted!

As a film maker with a Z1, would my savings be better spent on a Letus Extreme? …instead of a 5D MKII?

I have seen an ‘as new’ preowned Letus extreme EX1 bundle, with 72mm adapter and Nikon ‘F’ Len Mount for about £1300.

Would that make my Z1 happy?
Also, it says it has a custom achromat lens for PMW-EX1… is that especially fot he EX1, or is it the same for Z1?

    Help me Obi!! :0/

    Steve (UK)

  • …and would the letus extreme/z1 still fit on a MANFROTTO 501525 tripod?

  • Hi philip, I am using a sony ex1 and a letus. can you tell me what is a good monitor for at the camera and also using it as a field monitor if its possible with a sdi input?
    Thx.

Greetings a big fan of you, Ruud Stork.

Ps. the greenpeace shoot in India was great!

  • Hi !!

First of all great videos you have, congratulations :)

My question is very simple, I bought a Sony hd sr10 and later an Encinema 35mm adaptor, I´m happy with the results filming during the day, but at night, indoors or with poor light (like I usually film) is terrible, lots of grain and noise like most of the “cheap” cameras I have tried.

I need that you recommend me a camera that I can shot at night (Ex:with night city lights, night club lights) with an acceptable quality without noise or grain, under 1500$ (max. 2000$).

    Thxs a lot :)

    Helder A.

    • Hi Helder,

I know that this post is old, so your situation may have very well changed, but I’ll submit my 2 cents anyway, just in case ;)

I own a Sony SR11 myself, so I can completely relate. I recently splurged and bought a Canon T2i. Absolutely no regrets! Incredible quality footage! I could go on about the pros, but you can read enough about the DSLR video on here from Philip. The T2i (AKA baby 7d) is a great solution for lowlight. I think the Canon 50mm 1.8 lens would be a fast, budget lowlighter. Both could be purchased for under $1000. A lot of bang for the buck!

Hope this might be of help in your video ventures!

      -Shelli

  • Hi Philip,

Next week I am starting a 6 day shoot of a short film using the Sony EX-1 with a Letus35 Elite adapter and a set of 35mm Zeiss lenses.
I have a few shots in which I need a large depth of field. Since I can not get that DOF with the adapter I figured I must take these few shots without it.
    Is there any other solution?
(getting the Ultimate adapter is not an option for me right now)
Would I be able to mix in a single scene shots both with and without the adapter? Or would I receive a totally different look?

    Thanks,
    Gino

  • Phillip,
Great stuff on your site. I bought a 5d Mark II and I was wondering what lens to buy: Canon 50mm 1.2L or Canon 50mm 1.4 very big difference in price. I’m shooting video and stills, I also want to save for some Zacuto Zfinder and Tactical Shooter. If I get the 50mm 1.4 I could buy the other stuff. Any thoughts?

  • The 7D eats away battery fast. I’m seriously thinking about buying the Canon BG-E7 Battery Grip. But since it only stores 2 batteries, I am left wondering if it’s worth the price.

Also If I get it, am I still able to use a matte box setup?

  • Hi Philip

There’s been some chat on the Red website about deficiencies in the 5D sensor, specifically line skipping, moire and aliasing.

I’d be really interested in your practical experiences of these problems (if any). ie, do they show up when you display your work on a 50″ plasma for instance, or are they so trivial as to not be of concern?

    Cheers

    Peter

  • Phillip, I just purchased the 7D and I was wondering how you get such clean images. I have shot nighttime footage, and I seem to get a noisy image. Should I have a special setting on? shoot in the lowest ISO?
    -Thanks

  • Hey Philip!

I was wondering what you thought about the JV HM100U verses say the Sony V1U? I just heard that it doesn’t shoot timelapse, and my DSLR and stills don’t have the feature yet, so that might be a make or break on the JVC, but otherwise it seems like a great camera.

I shoot documentary stuff, and I feel like shooting with the 7D on the go might not be ideal, though the footage looks great. And it also inhibits me from using the HMC150, because it’s hard to log all that footage. Tape or the JVC’s footage that doesn’t have to be expanded to Pro Res seem to make more sense.

Maybe I should but a cheap digital point and shoot that does time lapse and bight the bullet, but that sounds shoddy to me. It’s like the industry doesn’t really have a solid solution out there yet. Everything has some serious drawbacks.

The HM100U’s size is huge for me. I could get it, a recorder, DSLR, lens, mics…all in a small backpack.

    Alright,
    Thanks!
    -Aaron

  • Hey!! Im from Ukraine and im extremely intrested in Yours articles! You do a great job.
    I have a few questions!

    1) Do you know about JAG35 adapter? How do you you think is it ok?
    2) What is better? To buy Canon 7D camera with one or two good lenses or buy for the same money 35mm adaptor and cheap dv or hdv camera/ And also lenses for adaptor maybe 1 or 2.? The same money for each choice!

I need for filming music clips and student indie films!!!

    Thanx a lot

  • Dear Philip,

Thank you for your wonderful website! I am new to the 5D MkII. I’m having some trouble editing movie clips. I have compressed my footage with Compressor Codec 422 ProRes (I don’t haveStreamclip). On my FCP timeline, even after rendering, the footage “skips.” It does not appear smooth. I want to use these clips with other clips that I shot with the Canon XHA1.

Any advise on how I can make the clips look smooth?

    Thanks so much!

    Nilufer (Canada)

  • I love the look of your work. What are you currently shooting, editing and color grading with (Video). (I know you have used Magic Bullet)

  • When doing a film like Sofia’s People, what do you ask each person before you film them? For the homeless, do you offer them some money or anything? What are people’s general reaction to you?

    Thanks.

  • What stabilizer do you use? I’m shooting with the 5DMII and I just ordered the glidecam HD 2000, but I want something that I don’t have to balance every time I change lenses, any suggestions?

  • Hi Philip,

Wondering if you can help. I m trying to work out which way is the best to leap in terms of the Mac. Do I go for a 17″ Mac Book Pro or do I go for a Mac Pro? So I was wondering what your experience was like in terms of which you prefer to use / find yourself using the most. I want to be able to run Final Cut Studio including motion and color but I don’t want to be tearing my hair out waiting for comps or grading to render.

Any advice or insight you may have would be great as it’s been 20 years since I last used a Mac in anger but I am getting sick of Windows taking as much or more resources than a high end graphics app (this seems like someone somewhere has lost the plot when it came to the concept of what an operating system was all about).

    Thanks

    Mark

  • Hello Philip
    need your advice
I’m trying to do timelapse with my Nikon D5000.
I did few tests few on P mode (auto aperture and shutter), and few on full manual.
i also turned off the “avtive D lighting” wich automatically fix shadows, and still have a problem of brightness canges between following pictures, which make the clip unusable.

Interval breakes are not more than 12 seconds.

Any idea of how to solve it.

    thanks

    Amos

  • Hi Mr.Bloom,
I recently got hold of a Redrock M2 lens adapter with a Nikon mount. I’m going through hoops to get a zeiss lens just for the sharpness and the great reviews I’ve read about. Would the lens mount right on the Redrock, or I would need a mount for the zeiss.

Also, I accounted a tiny mishap with the Redrock. The edge sharpness sucks in low light and can only give perfect images only under a well lit set. Is there a way to enhance it?

    Warm regards,
    Sherif.

  • Hi Phil
What are the best settings to create a timelapse of light streaks of cars at night on an EX-3.

    Thanks

  • Hi Mr. Bloom

I’ve just finished a TV Spot for National Basketball League with EOS 5D MK II. You can see and read about it at http://www.ilkercanikligil.com/?p=1332&lang=en

    Thanks for your time.

  • Hi Philip, I am currently trying to do the workflow to convert 30p to 24p. I am getting stuck with the Cinema Tools part, for some reason the “Conform” option is not available to me. Any ideas? Thanks!

    • have you converted to XDCAM? If you have it wont work. needs to be the native files or pro res.

  • Philip,
I was wondering how you achieve your super slow motion.
I don’t know why I never found out about you before. Great films and Instruction. I’m getting a EX3 and a Letus setup next week.
    Thank you x10!
    -Elijah

    • normal slow motion i use overcrank on my ex3/ex1 60fps slowed down to 25p, otherwise i use a pug in call twixtor

  • Hi Phil.
Are you making any compensation in compressor for brightness or saturation for the web? My pieces in mac lool with the selected gamma, however once imported to Exposure Room or Vimeo, It looks washed out.
    Any advice??
    Thanks
    Maurice
ps. other people are also having the same problem with QT movies.

    • no i dont do anything…how are you converting for upload to vimeo or xr?

      • Thanks for getting back Phil.
I convert my files to Apple ProRes 422 first. Than I color correct and I export from the timeline as a QT movie self contained. I drop the QT movie to compressor and then I used the settings that is suggested for HD movies for Vimeo by mcnichol.com/vimeo.htm
However when it’s imported into XR or Vimeo, the image looks washed out.
My screen is set to 2.2 gamma. It’s frustrating after spending countless hours color correcting.
What would you suggest?? can you share your settings.
        Thanks a lot
        Maurice

        • i don’t do anything special when i export. but i don’t use compressor. i simply export from quicktime pro 7 as h264 mp4 6000 kbps

  • Hi Philip!

I need advice badly. I’m thinking about buying HV40 or HF S100 but I just found out about 7D. I know it’s better but I’m afraid I would not be able to shoot with it properly without extra equipment (like tactical shooter and z-finder). Would you be able to shoot something like Dublin People without it?

Also I wanted to know how durable the battery pack of 7D is? In terms of video of course.

I need a travel camera as a tourist and something for small projects like first documentaries and short movies.

So 7D? And if not which one would you suggest – HV40 or HF S100?

    • check out the 7D with an LCDVF. You do need accessories but you can just about get away with this. hfs100 is good camera. but totally differnt

      • Thanks! I will check it out!

And I understand that I will skip on 7D, you believe HFS100 is better than HV40?

  • hi
I have a 7d and want to buy a mic
of the two on your site which one would be a better buy
    thanks

  • When converting from H264 to ProRes in either MPEG StreamClip or Compressor I noticed that it always automatically sets the field dominance to upper, which it should for 1080i, for 1080P field dominance should be set to none. That isn’t an option in MPEG StreamClip but there is a check box for de-interlacing, which I’d think should remain un-checked since the source is “supposed” to be progressive 29.97.

  • Hi Philip
Do you use any picture profiles when shooting with the EX-3, and could you share them.
    Thanks
    Maurice

  • Hi Philip,

I have noticed that you have a great list of recommended gear, and sometimes you lists sales of plug-ins, etc. Do you have a list of recommended plug-ins anywhere? There are so many, but I am sure have tried your share!

    Thanks

    Jeff

  • Hi Philip,

Great site! I am doing a long hike in the arctic next year (1000 km) and taking the GH-1 as my main camera. Can you recommend an external mic other than the Rode Video Mic. It is too big and the 9v battery is a definite no-no. Something tough, lightweight, and that uses a AA or AAA please! I’ll probably be taking an LS-10 or 11 for recording, but the mic needs to work with the camera as well of course.

    Thanks,

    John

  • Hi Philip
first off all – GREAT SITE AND STUFF!
my question is, im looking for a VIDEO DSLR
my first guest will be the CANON 7D but i want to know, do you know anything about a new nikon (D400) with FULL HD video recording? The thing is that my partner have a lot of nikon prime lenses, so we want to use them for video.

If i get the 7D, will our nikon D300 prime lenes fit in the canon body with an adapter…and if it does, wich one can you recomend me (keeping the AF)

    thanks for your time!
    Cristóbal

  • Hi Philip,

I am shooting a short film outdoors with the Canon 5D. I will convert to 24p and edit in FCP. I’d like to slow down a few clips using FCP or Motion’s Optical Flow Retiming. Do you have any advice as to which settings on the Canon 5D would best allow me to slow down certain clips in post?

    Thanks!

  • Philip,

I’m noticing horizontal banding when shooting at high shutter speeds on the 7D. Is that normal? I usually keep my shutter set to 50 but I was trying to get a crisp slow mo shot at 720p and decided to ramp up the shutter speed then i noticed soft dark horizontal lines very slowly moving up across the screen.

Here’s an example (vimeo says it’s going to need 30mins to process this) so it might not be up yet. http://www.vimeo.com/7956248

Never noticed it before, called customer support they’re oblivious. Tried it in different lighting sources/temperatures (same problem).

    Is this normal?

  • Philip, I read somewhere that taking clips right from your 7D, and putting them into MPEG Streamclip for Pro Res , will add more noise or artifacts in the video, and using compressor doesn’t. Have you heard this? or have you experienced anything like that?

  • Hi Philip, I just bought the fotodiox nikon-canon adapter for the 5d mrk2
Seems I have to change the iso and the shutter speed all with the top dial and the rear control wheel now has no control functions whatsoever.
Do you have this experience as well..or can you get the rear wheel to adjust iso with the nikon lens mounted..same situation in both camera mode and lens up movie mode..
    thanks
    M

  • Hey Phil Daddy,

    2 quick questions:

Buying a 7D…would you stay away from the kit lens? What lens would you recommend for a starter that good for relatively good for everything? Also something that won’t break my bank.

Thanks Phil and I promise never to call you Phil Daddy again.

    Cheers

  • Dear Philip,

My name is Lee from southkorea.
Thank you for your wonderful works! I have 5D MkII too.
    I got question for you.
    What kind picturestyle you use?
    Please Let me know.
And Why don’t you come korea and make films?
    Korea is wonderful.

    Thanks!

  • Hi Philip,

I’m about to get a 5D Mark II mostly for video and have old FD mount lenses that I was using with an AE-1. I’m looking for an adapter and was wondering if you came across a good one; or if you would even recommend using them.

I also was looking through the 5D manual online and wanted to know what happens when you reach 12 min of HD footage. Does the camera just create a new file and keeps recording or does it just stop and you have to manually resume recording?

    Thanks.

  • Mr. Bloom.

I am novice. I have a GH1. What is the one thing I can do or 1 piece of Kit that I can get that would really improve my shooting. There are so many options I.E. a Matte Box or a cheap/but good prime…

    Thanks,

  • Hi Philip,

I am a videographer seriously thinking about selling my Panasonic AG-HVX200 in favor of a Canon 7D…why? Because I am after that “cinematic” feel in an affordable package (relatively)

My question is what starting level kit do you suggest would be needed to go along with the basic 7D camera body in order to facilitate interviews of 2-3 people. For the purposes of this question I am not focused on lighting but rather sound, stabilizers, monitors, rail systems, lenses etc. I will add to this kit over time but what should I have right out of the gate to get the kind of results I see in your films?

    All the best
    Steve

  • Hi Philip,

Love the site and all your work.

    I recently bought a 7D and i am still learning….
A couple questions above Steve Staffan had a question about the noise from the 7D.
I too keep seeing noise in the shots. The first thing i shot was
at night and with a mid level iso (2000). After seeing san francisco
i thought the living room with lights would be enough not to get
all the noise. But not even close. Using a 5D and a F1.2 makes probably all
    the differrence? ;-)

Now i shot at iso200 an a rather nice day with an tamron 17-50 F2.8
And i still see noise. It is not as crisp as i thought it would be.
    I hope i am not too picky…
Also the audio, with a røde microfone has a LOT of noise (the other kind)in it.

Is there something i am missing (a bad 7D) or is the use of very good lenses essential for the 7D? or am i just too critical?….

    thanx a bunch.
    Ray

  • Hi Philip,

Great site you got here, been following your adventures for a little while, all good stuff, so many thanks due to you for educating us newbies…. Actually I’ve been a pro stock travel shooter for 30 years, shot all over the planet, in almost every (still) format and LOVE the highest quality poss,
    SO
I invested in a little Panny GH1 for my new project, which involves shooting very short clips (around 20 seconds MAX) of ‘moving still’ subjects (flag flopping lazily, river moving, close-up of grasses waving, tree blowing slowly, that sort of thing), and my head is a-buzzing with all this ere codec transcoding malarkey… it all turns out jumpy!

I’m TOTALLY confused about HOW one gets from AVCHD on the GH1 to the highest-poss output, there seem to be so many variations to choose from:
I don’t want to get very involved with the editing side (yet!), but am having trouble with all the options I get by using Adobe Premiere Elements 7 on a PC – whether in Mpeg4 or QT H.264 it all seems very jerky, even though (of course) it’s all shot on a solid tripod…

    SO
any advice please on which software will give me the least hassle with getting from AVCHD to the highest-possible quality output?
Don’t mind if I use a PC or a Mac, (we have both here) but I don’t have the huge budget needed for FC studio /Pro: Would there be any particular reason to switch from Premiere to, for instance, iMovie or FC Express?

Please advise the most painless way to make the most out of my footage, in order to keep the quality as HIGH as poss?

    Which software, what settings?

many thanks for your time, and keep up the good work

    panman (in Herefordshire, UK)

  • I’ve got a 7d on the way, and I was looking over at my camcorder and thought, “could I tear the fast, long zooming lens from my camcorder and use it on my large sensored, superior image dslr?”

Let’s say taking the Canon XL2′s lens and mounting to the EOS cams. I know there is an XL to EF mount but the other way around might help doc shooting and event covering. Faster autofocus (if it’ll work) and zoom capabilities.

Am I just reaching for clouds or is this possible with an adaptor that I don’t know about, or is someone gunna rip me off and make a million bucks (about half that in QUID or whatever you English say)?

What do you think? Thanks friend. —Joe B.

    • not possible am afraid. lens is designed for 1/3″ sensor so image it projects is WAY smaller than 35mm sensor.

  • Oh my God you’re so ingenious thank you so much for sharing that with great questions and answers from up above…

I really have been appreciating all of your work…
as you know prob i am the guy from Brazil in sou America
i love the way you keep the HD IMAGE on your web videoography…
    It’s pristine…

I wish I were as smart as you are…

A perfect filmmaker; I think in my view…
Phil I was wondering tho if you know how to do something else that I have been seeing a lot on movies on the vimeo site lately; and that is:

You know how like when a camera is focusing on the road and there is the sun there…shimmering just above the asphalt?

then you see something that looks sort of that heat that comes off of it?
sort of hovering over the road?

Its like there is a transparent mist in the air and its a fluctuation in sort of waves of heat?

It gives you the feeling of scorching heat coming out of the asphalt at noon or at the hottest part of the day ?
when the son is the hottest!!!

Well I was wondering how to achieve that effect?

    Thank you phil

    I love your work

  • Hi Philip!

I will be buying a 7D next week or so and I was thinking about some all purpose lens to begin with.

I own an Canon EF 50 mm 1.8 – but it wil be like 80mm on 7d.

I will be shooting some short movies and mini documentaries.
So i decided to go with a wider zoom:

    Canon EF-S 17-55 mm f/2.8 IS USM

Do you think it is a good choice?

Also there is a lot rumble about 7D overheating issue. I’m going to Sierra Leone for a bigger project sometime next year, so it could be an issue. Have you experienced this problem?

Thanks for the reply in advance! And thanks for all the good work you do! The community owns you a lot.
If we ever met I’m buying beers!

    • hi Pawel. that is a very good zoom lens for the 7D.

I personally have not had any overheating issues.

      Best

      P

  • Hi Phillip,
I’m a film student looking to buy the Canon 7d. What kind of lens do you recommend to start out with? I heard the zoom lenses are difficult to focus. Is this true? Also, I’d like to keep the price down as much as possible.
    Thanks!
    -Jenna

    • that is the downside of the DSLR that shoots video Jenna. There is no one lens that is cheap and great am afraid. All the cheap zooms are poor. All the good zooms are expensive and prime lenses mean more than one lens.

  • Hey Philip
I love the timelapses. I own an EX-3 How do you adjust your camara when shooting from mid afternoon to night so that the exposure is enough as it gets dark. Do you put it in manual?
    Thanks

  • Hi Philip
I used an EX-3 for timelapse. I am having a difficult time setting the camara so that the exposure is adjustable as the timelapse goes from afternoon to night. What would you suggest? auto exposure?

  • Ok its time I grew up.

I bought FCE with the thought that I’d learn this and move upto the FCP but I am nervous about the learning curve… so I’m sat here thinking is Premier a better solution, easier etc..?

The truth is I have got my self in a rut with iMovie and I really need to move on and up my game. I love my Z5E and my 5Dmk2 but i know that I’m wasting them using a basic editor.

    Thoughts? advice?

    Jonathan

    • iMovie really wastes what you do. If you are using Mac go with FCP – don’t waste time on FCE.

If you are on PC – Adobe or Sony Vegas.

  • I’m in trouble – wha should I buy? A video mic or stereo video mic? Think: documentaries.

  • I’ve recently been shooting with the Sony EX3 HD. Excellent stuff. Trying to make a decision as to the best way to archive the footage. (Long Term Storeage) Am thinking about Blu-Ray but would appreciate your opinion.

  • So have you ever heard of a faulty LP-E6? I have three with my 7D and it seems that whenever I use one of them and record video, the files are faulty. All of the other batteries are ok, but the one produces the “?” on the screen when I try to play the files back.

    Thanks!

  • Hi Philip

Which intervalometer do you use with your 5D mkII? What’s the story about some only being able to record 99 frames?

    Thanks

    Riaan

    • i use the canon one and the ebay knock off. Set frames to 00 or — and it’s infinite, ignore the 99 thing

  • Are the Zacuto viewfinders the best available for DSLR’s? Are there any available that can be adjusted like a Betacam vf for different body positions, or are they all set in one position behind the LCD? That could be quite uncomfortable and limiting, no?

I’m looking for DSLR kits for wildlife filming. I’m getting too old to drag all the heavy stuff along. (Currently shooting XD HD) Is the 5D mkII a good option? Any suggestions on lenses, tripods, mics. I use FCP for post at the moment.

Can medium format lenses (Mamiya 6:4.5, Pentax 6:7 or Hasselblad) be adapted for DSLR’s at all? Would it be worth the exercise? Is the glass good enough? Old medium format lenses can be picked up fairly cheap nowadays.

Thanks for a great site. More questions soon.

    • if you are after cheap glass get a fotodiox pro adaptor and buy old Nikon lenses. Work just fine for video. Macro tubes are ok. I have just bought a 100mm F2.8L f2.8 Canon Macro, there is a non L series and that is very good too and almost half the price

  • Told you there’ll be more questions!

Any ideas for macro lenses? I’ve used 35mm lenses with extension tubes on the big HD (video) cameras before. Got great magnification but the pic was a bit fuzzy. I’m talking macro as in getting an ant’s head full screen.

  • Hey Philip,

I’m a film student at USC, and I’m about to go ahead and take the dive and purchase a Letus adaptor, probably the elite. But what’s holding me back at the moment is my general confusion with lenses, and which one is the best for me.

I’m really new to understanding lenses and don’t really know much, so I was hoping you could help me in choosing the best one.

What I’m really looking for is shallow depth of field. This has been something I’ve been trying to achieve for quite some time, and it’s really the reason I’m looking into buying the Letus.

I have a Canon XH A1 (not the greatest out there, but definitely really good, especially considering my somewhat limited price range).

I’m looking into buying probably 1 to 2 lenses with the Letus. Which ones would you suggest?

    Thank you so much!

  • Hi Philip

Wonder if you can help. I’ve just bought a couple of zeiss primes with Contax C/Y mounts and a cheap “dumb” adapter to connect to my 7d. the problem i’m having is my in camera light meter is total of by about 4 stops and what i see live view in stills mode is super dark compared to the image it takes. video mode what i see on screen is what i get recorded though? but metre reading is still wildly inacurate. do you think it’s the cheap adapter? i’ve ordered an optix v5 chipped on the has Af confirm etc.

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Cheers

    Olli

  • Hi Philip

Was wondering if you have heard any news about the 5D mark II firmware? Got a 5D mark II and ordered a 550 the other day.
We are going to Austria in march to film some skiing. Do you think it is possible that the firmware is out until then?

Any tips about what lens I should get for the 550? Have pretty much decided to go for the Canon 50 mm/1.4, but…?

Really inspired by your timelapse videos by the way, gonna try do some of that:)

Thanks for a great blog, read it every day…

    Cheers from Sweden!

    /Tomas

  • Philip,

So I need a little handheld advice with the Panasonic 300. I’m shooting a run and gun doc in a week and I have little experience on the 300. I’ve tested with it a few times and it feels great. Also, I’m confident using the Panasonic camera interface, since I own hvx200, but I’m a little worried about using a shoulder mounted camera, something I’m not used to. Although I have worked a lot with the old JVC HD200u, my body of work has been mostly on “palm cameras” (Ex1 and said Hvx). Do you find a noticeable difference in technique with shoulder mounted vs palm styled cameras? Since you’re a man with plenty of experience using both designs, do you have any advice that might help me during the shoot?

  • Hi, first off you helped me a lot with your instructional video. I purchased it and it was worth every penny to me.

Im looking to make a tourism documentary and I require some tracking shots to be made down a long street, however i cannot seem to keep the camera steady, no matter what the video still shakes whenever i take a few steps forward.

Im looking to purchase either a Zaguto Gunstock Quick Draw or a BlackBird Stabilizer.

Im not sure about the Zaguto because the shoulder stock is against my shoulder and when i move would the camera still produce unsteadiness?

The Blackbird Stabilizer appears very steady when I move but it’s a weighty accessory and I hope not to have to lug that around.

Which would you recommend? Thanks very much for your reply.

    • quick draw is useless. rapid fire is much better and the one i use all the time

      • Thanks for your reply, i’ll look into a tactical shooter instead.

Another serious problem i have is my movie is really incredibly noisy in low light situations, im currently using the 17-55mm F2.8 Canon EFS lenses. I notice you use the Canon Prime 50mm F1.2 L Lenses in some of your videos.

Is that the contributing factor to the better low light videos? If so, i’ll have to dump some money into purchasing that lens.

        Thanks!

  • Hi Phillip,
My name is Juergen Heinemann. I am a Cinematographer getting ready to make the jump to a 7D. My question is this. I have a Dual 1 gig G4 Power Mac. And I’m concerned it’s not going to be fast enough to handle the video. I’m running FCP 5.1.4 on it right now. Would it be possible to use Proress? Or should I just Bite the bullet and upgrade? Any advice would be much appreciated.

  • Hi Philip!

First of all: your work is so amazing!
I´m a german student and i want to write a thesis about time lapse photography. I´m in search of a book or professional articels about it. I didn´t find anything excepting lots of tutorials and personal blogs. So
    do you know a book?
    thanks

  • Hi Philip,

forgetting about frame rates for a moment and just looking at image quality (aliasing, moire, noise), i am wondering how much the LENS is to blame and not the camera.

At first i thought it was all the camera, but after much research online, i can see how an excellent lens (like cinema style lenses) can reduce aliasing, moire, etc.

With that in mind, do you think it would be possible that a camera like a t2i/550D or a T1i/500D can produce as great an image with an excellent lens? For image quality, how important is the lens versus the camera body?

I’ve seen your 5d/ 7d comparison, but i’m wondering if this goes further with the consumer models as well.

Thanks in advance Philip. You rock!

    -Jason

    • I get the T2i tomorrow. Most of it is purely down to the cameras chucking lines away to scale the image down to 1080p. Lenses help, but not enough to justify buying cinema lenses

      • Looking forward to your review of the T2i Philip. Can you please do those comparisons where you shoot the same scene with 2 or more camera bodies (T2i, 7D,5d), but with the exact same lens/stop/frame? i think we all need to see this.

        thanks so much.

  • hey phil, I’m new to the DSLR world, though this summer I am planning on selling my DVX and everything with it to jump into DSLR. I have been looking at a number of cameras and I was wondering if you could give some quick advice? I have been looking at the canon T2i, and the 7D. they are almost identical from what i can see though if i spend the money on a DSLR I want to spend it on something “professional” you could say. I don’t want to buy a camera that will be out of date in a year. any quick advice?

    • this business moves fast…the investment of just 800 bucks for a t2i wouldnt be too bad would it?

  • Hi Philip,

I have been a fan ever since I saw your tutorial “Grading ‘Return to Dungeness’.”

I teach video editing at a high school in the US. We have made several documentaries but have the opportunity to do more. I would like to incorporate more of a film look to the next one but the budget is almost non-existent.

We have a Panasonic AG-DVX100BP that we are using right now but I also have the funding for a Canon T2i and one of the slower primes. I can add more gear/kit/stuff next funding cycle.

My question is: In your opinion, is the T2i going to give us major advantages over the Panasonic in terms of “cinema look”? Is the T2i worth building an advanced program on? Or should I hold out for a 5DMkII knowing that it will be at least a year before that could happen. We edit on Final Cut Pro and use Magic Bullet Looks.

    Thanks for your time.
    Jim C.

    • absolutely! it’s HD for a start and gives you the same sized, almost, as a s35 camera or RED. Mark III is not super close as far as I know.

  • Hello
I want a good 50mm lens for video use, I noticed that you are using the zeiss 50mm 1.4 in some video, and the the cannon 1.2 on the newest.

The Canon 1.2 is too expensive for me, but I was wondering how the focus ring in the “canon” lens for the manual focus compared to the nikon or the zeiss?
I read it was that difficult to do focusing with autofocus lens, because the course of the ring is too short

In your opinion, what is the lens that has the best image quality but also a correct manual focus ring

    thanks in advance

  • Hello Mr. Bloom, I just had some questions regarding the new T2i. I mainly shoot snowboarding but I would like to do some short films and edits this summer. If I went from my DVX 100b to a T2i, would I be losing important features in regards to snowboard filming such as auto zoom and focus? Or maybe should i just keep both? thanks a lot.

  • Ok this is going to be like one of those word problems that you have to figure out.

I’m shooting a short film that is about 15 minutes and is supposed to appear like one continuous take. Director wants it handheld/docustyle for mobility and it takes place all inside a house in various rooms.

Most of the time its just one or two people in a shot.

    I’m using a 7D and own the redrock kit shoulder mount/followfocus w/whip.

We have lights but need to use sparingly. Limited rigging time and don’t want to see stands anywhere.

Anyone have a suggestion on the best lens for such a situation? I thought wider is better to smooth out my handheld moves a but I still want the shallow DOF. Fastest lens possible is also ideal.

I have the 17-55 2.8 canon which is great with IS to help smooth the little variances in the movement. But I don’t plan on using the zoom, I would just choose the focal length and leave it.

That also said I could rent a faster 24mm or 35mm 1.4 and get much more light and sharpness but I lose IS. Do you think this matters? I will shoot some tests but if you have any insight on this choice it would be wonderful to add to my decision making process. Also thought about the Zeiss 28mm f2 since I will be pulling focus or have a focus puller and I heard the Zeiss’ have a better focus ring. I can not confirm this.

  • Hey Philip, I have a couple of questions for you.

When traveling, what case do you use? I’m not talking about your Skywalker-ten-crate travel with everything except your mom…unless you take her with you as well. If you were going on a 2-3 day excursion, what bag/case would you pack your gear in? What’s the one in your 5D Filmmaker video?

OK…so that was actually a lot of questions…but I have another.

Have you compared the Canon 70-200 2.8L IS to the new Canon 2.8L IS II?

Thanks greatly! You and your site rock!

  • Do you color correct the blacks and whites (ie. three-way color corrector) before grading for a specific look (in MBL)?

    Thanks!

  • Hi Philip,
I’ve just bought a Kiss x4 (50dd/t2i I hope) for shooting video. I’m strictly an amateur, and bought the cheap 50mm Canon f1.8 to go with it (to hopefully achieve the shallow depth of field look).

I wanted to buy one more lens, that I could use with the 5D mark II (should I upgrade in the future), and was looking at the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM as a versatile companion to the 50mm lens.

Do you think this is a good choice?

Thanks for taking the time to answer all our questions!

  • Hey Philip, quick question… I am days away from buying a 5dmkii, and I was wondering if the Canon Normal EF 50mm f/1.4 USM lens causes any vignetting on the full frame body??? I am about to travel to Tokyo for the summer, and I just need a good, fast, prime for all-around kind of use (video or photo really). Would this lens be the right one to get for this price range? Or do you have another suggestion? Thanks for any help!

    Cody

  • Phil, I just saw it yesterday but can’t put my finger on it? What is the profile you are using/recommending for the T2i?

    thanks,

  • Hi Philip

Very quickly. you are something of a hero. So lovely to see someone sharing the wealth!

Now the q. Have you ever successfully managed to pull off a contrazoom with a DSLR. Guessing you’d need quite a few people to do it. Am trying to work it out but think I might be being too ambitious but I see it as a case of nothing ventured nothing gained

    • Without a motorised zoom lens would be very hard Rahul, possibly I suppose but never tried it! have to be a fixed aperture zoom that holds it’s focus throughout the range…

  • How was your work shown on the big screen at Skywalker…quicktimes played on a mac or a DVD?

  • Hi Mr bloom

im new user in ur site and i want to tank you for this site

i have problem with my 7D when im shooting on live mode when i zoom in or out the ires going to change lower or higher so when im recordein i cant make any zoom can u help me in this

    the camera is canon 7D

the lens is canon 18-135 ef-s

flash is sandisk extrem III 16 gg

thanx for ur time Mr bloom

    • the lens is not constant aperture so when you zoom in the iris will close down slightly. Downside of the cheap lens am afraid.

  • aha thanks Mr bloom

can u tell me about the good lens to fix this problem

  • Hey Philip,

Just had a question about Live View with the canon DSLRs. This is probably obvious, but can you use Live view to a computer and an HMDI Monitor at the same time? I’ve been searching a while for this and can’t find anything.

    Thanks!

  • Hey Philip,

I now have a Canon T2i/550D as part of my classroom kit. It is pretty much your fault but I’m OK with that. But what this camera has done is remind me of just how far behind the rest of the world 11 years in the classroom can put a guy.

With the T2i, I ordered a Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens and Manfrotto sticks with a 501DV head and one SanDisk Ultra 16 GB SDHC. All a step down from where I want to be but what my budget can handle. I hope the f/1.4 lens wasn’t a mistake…

Would you be willing to share your recommendations on what I should add in terms of lenses or other necessities?

I already have basic video gear like mics and booms and reflectors…

Thanks for your time. I have made your films required viewing in my advanced class.

    Jim C.

    • extra batteries for a start. the 50mm lens is good but a nice standard lens for that sensor is the sigma 30mm f1.4 and the best wide angle lens is the tokina 11-16mm f2.8

  • Do you use any specific methods to reduce aliasing in your videos? Such as a Caprock filters or post editing? I’m considering an investment in one or two of the Caprock filters, but I’m not sure if they are worth it.

  • Hi Philip, thanks for being so generous with sharing great information

I’ve been following your blogs for a while, I’m about to buy my first canon 5D MKII… which I want to use primarily for video.

I have decided to buy the body only. and buy a couple of lenses separately. which lenses do you recommend for starters?

or is that a bad decision… should i just order the one that comes with Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS USM AF Lens

    thanks much!

    sonia

  • Hi Philip,

About to shoot greenscreen with my 7D, wondering if there are any critical tips or considerations I should keep in mind while shooting.

Thanks in advance for this, and thanks for the abundance of useful info you provide all of us.

  • Hello Philip:

Are you going to review the Canon XF305? I hope you will.

If you do please ask Canon to include their WA-82 0.8x Wide Attachment Lens and tell us if it’s worth it.

    Thanks,

    Caesar

  • Phillip,
Love your work and learning so much from your tuts and reviews. I just moved across from HPX 172EX to Canon 7D. Love it but I just noticed this weird vertical banding on the shots. I have just updated the firmware to 1.2.1. Is this the fix or is there anything else I need to do? Been following setup based on your DVD for 7D.

    Regards
    Ray

  • Hey Philip!
I got a Q for you. If you’d have a limited budget (let’s say around 6000-7000 euro) would you buy a stronger DSLR (which one would be your choice…5d, 1d?) or a cheaper one (the rebel or the 7d) to save more money to buy good lens and other “accessories” ?

Simply, Let’s say you start from zero with this budget. What do you buy?

Just a suggestion. Thank you! You’re great!

  • Thanks Philip. Let me tell you that is great to have someone as prepared as you are answering questions and helping people on the net.

  • Dear Philip.

I’m about to buy the new Zacuto Zfinder for my 5d Mark II, but I still have doubts about the tripod and a steadicam system. The Zacuto products such as the Striker don’t look like they can be used as steadicams, so I thought maybe I could buy the Merlin one. Also, I thought about the Glidetrack dolly, that is cheap and looks really useful, but I do think a steadicam is much more necessary than a dolly.

Which kind of steadicam, dolly and tripod do you suggest me? And pls, make me save money! :)

Thanks and keep on being there for us!

    • Two very different tools. One is a handheld rig the other is a steadicam

The handheld rig is simply that. A way of handholding an awkward camera

  • Hey Philip how to i get more dynamic range on my t2i? thanks

  • Dear Philip,

my question is a complicated one. I feel all this excitament for the DSLR system and I love it. Everybody saying they are great (indeed they are) but still, why wouldn’t anybody produce a movie (I’m talking about something that will be shown in cinemas) shot with those cameras? Aren’t we getting too exiceted for a “movement” that will remain a web movement (like hundred other) and nothing more?

    • They are being used now. The winner of SxSW was shot on a 7D and countless others too. This is a new revolution and we are seeing more acceptance. Would I choose to shoot my $50 million movie on them, not just yet due to the issues. My $1 million feature? You bet!

  • Thank you Philip!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • question for rendering to .mp4 in vegas pro 9.0. Using 1080p 24fps footage from my 7d, render for a project more than 2 mins gets a “memory too low” error in mid render. I’ve tried several pc’s (everything from a , core 2 duo, 3 gb of ram, to a quad core, 4 gb of ram). Same result. I’ve read around, the answer seems to be purchasing a powerhouse pc. Just wondering if there was a simple tweak or trick someone else may know about. THANKS!

  • Hey!

When using the rebel t2i I seem to be getting much darker video than it looks on the LCD during Live View.

Also, when in live view mode, theres a number all the way on the bottom left. Using the scroll wheel makes it darker or lighter but I dont believe its the lcd brightness level…. or is it??

    • send me a photo. you sure you are in manual mode?

    • That is your exposure time/shutter speed. The lower the number, the brighter the picture and vice versa. Also the longer the exposure and less ‘crisp’ the movement.

  • I need someones help desperately, my western digital 1 terabyte hard drives usb port is missing i have done nothing its loose inside how do i get everything off of it????

  • Hi Philip!

How to reduce noise at minimun level while shooting (canon 5d mark II)? Is there a way to do that (reduce noise) with Magic Bullet looks in Adobe AE?

    Thank you!

  • Hey Phillip

Quick question… I am thinking of purchasing a DSLR camera- I have small production company and a good friend owns a camera hire company.
Was thinking of purchasing either a Canon 5D/7D or whatever is best, and hiring out when we are not using it.
Im just thinking…should I wait until the next generation comes out of DSLR’s?
What would your thoughts be on this? Are you aware of anything due out?
    Thanks

    L

  • Mr. Bloom,

Was curious as to how important you find color grading and other similar editing? Also how much of this do you do in your work (personal and professional)? Thank you so much. Congrats by the way on the ridiculous amount of visitors to the site.

    Very Respectfully,
    Bryan Tosh

  • Hey Phil, just curious, though I’m not all focused on names as much as the actual video, I was wondering if you think prod. company name’s popularity (as in not being very original) should be taken into consideration when deciding? Thanks.

  • Hi Philip,

I am thinking of buying a lens set from RPLens.com; but i noticed that they put “Black anodized aluminum step-ups to 80 mm O.D. are added to the front of the lens. To match with standard motion picture matte boxes and clamp-on shades.”

i also want to use the Vari-ND or FaderND but they both seem to not make a 80mm size. I can get an 82mm size Vari ND, but there’s no 80-82mm step up ring that i can find? i thought these were suppose to be standard sizes? What do you recommend? i really wanted those RP lenses and i dont have enough money for a matte box and several ND filters.

    Thanks a million Philip!

    Jason Casillas

  • Hi Philip,

I’ve listened with great pleasure to your potcast interview with Chris Jones, thanks for that potcast, and at 57;30 you are talking about a piece software you are using to make multiple backup’s to different disks at the same time.
Because there is some kind of “click” on the spot where you say the name, I can’t make out the name of it. It sounds like “shotbook pro” or something like that. I tried to google it, but I could’n find it.
Can you please tell me the name of this software, and maybe where to buy it?

    Thanks very much.

    Rob Koers.

ps: I’m doing a shoot of a two hour piano concert with 4 piano’s on a train station with several 5D’s and 7D’s. Hope they do the job! ;-)

  • Hello Philip

I’m writing this because i have a big trouble, i don’t know what camera i gonna buy!!

I have 2 cameras in my wishlist, both Panasonic
Is for general use, from wedding to documentary, sports, everything.

    Panasonic AG-HPX500E
    720P, but 2/3 inch sensor

    Panasonic AG-HPX371
    1080P, but 1/3 inch sensor

According to your experience, wish one i must buy?
Do you have some other camera to suggest me in that price ranges?

    Thanks in advance

    Keep up the good work
    Pedro from Madeira Island, Portugal.

    • touch choice. the new 371 has a small sensor but is true HD and has AVC Intra…its very cool despite the small sensor

  • hello
i ‘am french producer working with 5dM2 on a short film but we have a scene who use timelapse, it’s a plant who see growing at a window. i have a canon remote but i ‘am asking you if the Canon can shoot 4 days with one battery, if there is in the menu an option to shut down between 2 shoots. if it’s not can you tell me what kind of hardware i have to buy.
We thinks that the shooting will be 4 or 5 days every 15 minutes and the movies is shoot in 25p.Do you think it’s too much or not enough every 15 minutes.
    thanks a lot
    Régis from France

  • what are some easy time laps numbers to get me started? shots per frame ect..

  • Phillip, I’m trying to find a camera with full manual control in the video mode, but am in a financial situation that prevents me from purchasing a T2i or similar camera. I don’t really want a dedicated “video camera” as I will be shooting stills as well. Shallow DOF is not a must (it would be nice, but).

So far, the only camera I’ve been able to find that fits this bill is the Panasonic FZ35. I was wondering if you’ve come across anything else that would be similar. I’d prefer a “super-zoom” just from the standpoint of limited funds.

The main drawback is the CCD sensor. There are ways to minimize the streaking from bright lights, but CMOS is preferred. The SX20IS is nice, but lacks manual control for video, and the CHDK doesn’t seem to mention any specifics in this area as the version for the SX20 is still in beta.

At my wits end with this. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.

  • I am a beginner. I was wondering what your hard drive setups are. All of those movies that you keep posting–where do you export them to? Do you use the main hard drive of your Mac Pro? Do you recommend using a 2 terabyte drive and installing it directly into the Mac Pro or do you just use externals? What backup service if at all do you use?

Last year I was editing a wedding for some friends. I left for vacation came back and found somehow my second drive in the Mac Pro (terabyte) had completely crashed. Thanks God it was all Mini DV.

What do you suggest I invest in?

Current setup-Mac Pro 1,1 500 Gb HD (182 Gb left) on slot 1. 750 Gb on slot 2 (211 Gb left).
Externals – Terabyte DiskGo Quadcore (303 Gb left), 500 Gb Lacie

  • Hey Philip. I’m a beginner in the business. (nearly 7 years doing it), but nevertheless, beginner. What is your workflow with hard drives? All of those videos that you post, where do they get exported to from Final Cut? Do they go straight to externals, or do you keep your final cut cache, etc, on another hard drive in the one of the 4 slots on your Mac Pro?

I have Mac Pro 1,1 (2006) with 500 gb HD on slot 1, 750 gb on slot 2.
    Externals: DiskGo 1 terabyte drive

Please let me know what you recommend for backup and what’s the fastest way to deliver material. ? My rendering times on HD footage are taking a lifetime for me to get anything done

  • I apologize for leaving my comment twice, I didn’t realize my first one went through. (First timer)

  • Hi Philip, I would be interested in your experience with international traveling with gear. Like, what cases or bags you use on planes, what goes into cargo and what you keep with your personal luggage, good and bad experiences, trics. How to keep moving light and not break stuff. It’s a major consideration for me. Good enough for a blogpost? Thanks.

  • Hey Phil, do you know anything at all about the Olympus Pen? I shoot with a T2i but I wanted something to take with me that was more compact and shot good stills but is, at the same time, more than just a point and shoot. Thanks.

  • Ive edited a short I shot in 1080 with the Rebel t2i using FCP . But when I try to compress for the best quality on DVD with compressor it looks nowhere nearly as good as in FCP/Color…

Do you have any solutions for getting a finished short onto a SD DVD with optimal quality for video and sound???

    Thanks.

  • Hi Phil,

Love your work. I’m on the band wagon thanks to you. I’m loving the 5Dmark2 and seem to b getting lots of requests to use it at work.

I was wondering if you could recommend a monitor that has a decent peaking and zebra function with a HDMI signal? I’ve been struggling to find one, but maybe I’m looking in the wrong price range?

    Cheers

    Phil

    • i don’t know any with Zebra…Marshall has peaking and false colour. More high end ones have scopes and peaking

  • Hello Philip!

I admire your work, it is great!

I’ve been working like 2 months now with T2i, colors and feel are great, but when panning the video is not smooth, it’s like a strobing when panning the camera. Im shooting on 1080p @24fps. Converting to XDCAM HD 24 on MpegStramclip to edit in FCP, but even original native files are strobing when panning. Any help would be very appreciated.
    Thank you for your time.

  • I enjoyed your DVD on taking video with the Canon 7D. What wireless mic did the girl with the flaxen hair use?-Al Marsh, Frederick, MD

  • Hi Phil
I want to do slowmo. from 50p shot on my 550d. Saw your tutorial on using cinema tools but I am running FCE so not available to me. I have seen others say use speed function, ie: 50% to get half speed. Am I right in thinking this is not a correct solution. If not any suggestions? On another note I have just watched your “Southend” short and loved it. As an Essex boy i’ve done a few trips there, spot on!

  • Phil I think I found the FCE slowmo framerate conversion solution here, useful for anyone looking for it, bloody hard to find!

A free plug in called: JES Interlacer

The instructions are within the link below

  • hey phil, where in all this is there mention of gamma curves for natural skin tones. Or do i have to buy them from you ala steve shaw?

  • Hi Phil,
I’m currently looking to buy a new DSLR, mainly for shooting video. It would be between the 7D and some nicer lenses or the 5D mark ii (and maybe slightly cheaper lenses). The 5D is a bit of a stretch price-wise, but I would rather get a quality camera and save myself upgrading later on. What would you recommend?

    Cheers,

    Mike

  • Hi Philip,

In your experience, what are the least noisiest ISOs for the 7D? High, medium and low?

    Thank you,
    Jason

  • Hi Phil,

I’m getting a 5D MKII next year, I currently have a 7D and looking at the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L I, EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM and EF 70-200 L II, Just wondering if these lenses present more of an issue with Moiré or Artifacts in the higher F Stops? and if there will be an issue as the lenses are very sharp? I just want to future proof with pro lenses.

    Cheers

    Kris

  • Nice live show Mr. Bloom, good fun and informative and fab promo. I have a GH1 which I haven’t used enough because of the lack of a live monitor feed and get the feeling that tester13 has probably moved on from that to GH2. So looking at getting a GH2 but held back by the lack of 25p. I know this must be a really dumb-ass question, but doesn’t the 50i footage deinterlace to 25p OK? Presumably not or it wouldn’t be an obstacle? Also wondered if you have any training dvds for the GH1? I’ve explored it myself but always feel more confident when I hear someone who knows for sure say I AM doing the right thing! Can’t find anything on F-Stop.

  • Hello Phillip

I’ve been reading your blog for a while now and as Im trying to get into working in television film and media industry I recently bought a canon 60d.

Got the body and three lenses… great, except for editing I can edit things to a basic degree, but editing with such high quality hd footage is a bit of a pain for someone with a pretty standard 4gb ram- acer 5738z,I cant watch my stuff back realtime in the editing software which makes editing pretty much impossible.

Its annoying that I cant unleash the beauty that this camera is able to produce.

Does anyone know any better options than buying a new laptop altogether or a desktop to get things to play back and run more smoothly . Preferably something not expensive.

Oh I’m working with cs4 pp, and as a poor student Im pretty much maxed out as you can guess after buying a 60d.

In return here is a link to a bundle deal on the canon 60d £ 979

  • Hi Philip

Just recently filmed a travel log documentary in gambia with a couple of crew members who were using canon 7d’s, i was using a sony hvr z5, after the experience though i wouldn’t want to make a doc entirely with a DSLR, I’d love to have one for the great portability discrete filming, (apparently i could have been a terrorist when filming a church in the middle of gloucestershire and for some reason using a camcorder in a public place immediately youths (i’m 23) think i’m filming something for the BBC and that they may get on tele) any who i digress.

The atomos ninja has recently come out and I’m looking for a DSLR with a clean HDMI out, really just wondering if i should either wait for canon to release another camera and hope they get rid of the red/white dot issue or just cover up the dot somehow in FCP, or get a GH2 (even though i’d love a proper DSLR for photo quality), any thoughts on this little dilemma would be gratefully helpful

  • Philip,

First, thank you so much for sharing your amazing work and all of the additional information that goes along with it. I’ve learned so much and have been inspired to do more and more DSLR shooting because of you.

My question may be answered somewhere here but if so, I apologize, I’ve missed it.

I was wondering how you handle getting so much great footage of people? Meaning, how do you handle the approach, do you concern yourself with releases and such, etc? Having the ability to capture great imagery, an eye for composition, the technical skills, all of this is great talent … but there’s a talent too in approaching and handling those you film and I’d love to know more about how you handle that side of all of your wonderful experiments!

Again, if you’ve posted this elsewhere I apologize.

    Thanks again!

    Hans

  • Ha! Thanks Philip. Keep doing it!

  • Philip,
When are you going to get your hands on a Sony a77? I’m anxious to see if it lives up to its specs.

  • Hi Philip,
I’m a student of film school. I’m a GH2 user and I wanna buy Olympus 12mm F2 lens, the question I concerned about is the software correction of distortion and CA on M43 lens.As the test by lens tip http://www.lenstip.com/310.6-Lens_review-Olympus_M.Zuiko_Digital_12_mm_f_2.0_ED_Distortion.html
the REAL distortion of this fast wide lens is not acceptable in such a high price. I know the correction effects in still shooting, but how about in video shooting? Now I use the Olympus ZD 11-22mm as my wide lens, the optical quality is good but it’s not compact. Can u make a the distortion test of M43 wide lens in video mode or you can ask panasonic euro. I’m appreciate if you answer me.

    Best regard,
    Changxin

  • Hi Phillip,

Thank you so much for your website. It’s super awesome.

I’m starting a project in NYC where I’ll be shooting 2 person scenes, 3 min max, about moments that happen between people as they wait for the subway. So this will not be in the subway itself.

I’m looking for how to record audio. I want it to be top notch but also budget conscious. I was looking at the Rode mike but I’m worried about it being unidirectional. I wondered if you had some advice on what audio-setup I could make for the GH2 which would take into consideration the rather large ambient noises in subway stations.

    Thank you in advance!

    Best,

    Maayan

  • New to the site, and love it all. Bought a Canon 60d to do video recording as well as stills. I’m in a small band, and want to video our gigs, using Rode mic. Our sets are the typical 40 minutes long, but the 4 gig clip length will stop the recording, and I can’t leave the stand and mess with the camera every 12-24 minutes.

Question #1: Will any remote reset the video, so that, I could covertly restart the video just before each song, creating several clips? I checked the specs of the Canon LC-5 and it doesn’t appear to be able to control video.

Question #2: While I really don’t want to use 3rd party software, is there any out there that eliminates the limitation on clip length?

    Thanks.
