Shame about the editing.

The shots were nice in places but the song did not work with the piece.

If anyone is particularly interested in what moving footage is like from the outside, I'm happy to put up a couple of clips, just excuse the jerky technique!

Hi Henry,

Yes, the pans were slo-mo. The reason, as I mentioned in the text, is that at -25c the fluid filled head stopped working and smooth pans were impossible, far too jerky and useless.

Slo-mo was created in FCP using some short clips that were stable. Doing it again, I'd have better sticks and Manfrotto reckon they can make a special fluid cartridge for the low temps.

Lots of stuff we take for granted change at low temperatures, even though I've been there often I couldn't predict the head locking up.

i film race cars for a living and so i was very curious to see some fast 'action' shots from these HDSLRs... but unfortunately the only 'external' shots of the car (not the roof mounted ones) seem to stutter a bit... are they slo-mo ? do you remember which shutter speed was used as well?

As for Mac workflow with 'hybrid' cams, i usually use a cheapo Aiptek HD cam that films at 1280x720 @ 60fps as a 'suicide road cam' for slo-mo. The only acceptable results i've had in converting from 60fps to 25 for Pal land is exporting original footage from Mpegstreamclip as Image sequence. Then import all images in FCP after having set default still duration @ 1 frame... this is the only way it won't throw away usefull frames... here's an example:

I am still wondering why the XL or XH series has not changed in the past few years. Maybe they are letting the other companies duke it out in the format wars. Or maybe they realized there is a lot of potential with the 5D's. Either way, it's time to play ball. I hope canon comes out with something soon. I haven't bought anything since my XL2 because the HD res keeps increasing and the formats keep changing.

Good Stuff! And I like the new Case Studies Section. ;-)
