  1. Bill Campbell I'm new!

have edited a video with my fs100 that I want to post to youtube. Heres my problem, I tried a few different exporting settings like using vbr 2 pass with a nitrate of 8, max 10. I even tried a 32 bitrate. When I post to youtube the quality is only good in 1080 mode how can I get it to loom good on regular 360 mode without ppl having to view inn 1080. I notice a lot of visa that gives good quality in 360p any suggestions

I usually use h264, vbr 2 pass, min bitrate 12 max 25, works fine for me.

    For web, i always use:
    H264
    ProfIle High 5.1
    Vbr 2 pass
    5mbps of bitrate

If your on a MAC use H264, but if your on a PC use WMV. I used H264 for a while (PC) but noticed the same thing. Also a lot of H264 files would play fine but do strange things when Vimeo and YouTube compressed them. Just make sure you crank the quality all the way up on WMV's it has a limit of 10mps. I have not had one problem since I switched to WMV for Vimeo and Youtube uploads.

I would avoid WMV, its not widely used, stick to H.264, max bit rate around 10. Pointless going higher as YouTube/Vimeo don't go higher than that and the bigger the exported file the more web compression you will receive. Plus YouTube and Vimeo couldn't care less what does or does not play on your home system as its converting the file for its own playback software. Check the FAQ on the sites as they have recommended setting for upload.

Check the exported video frame rate, I had an instance when compressor for FCP, was outputting some very odd numbers, 24.8 fps 24.2 from a 25p timeline, was causing audio sync problems once uploaded. It's ok now after a software update but at the time I had to use the export function from inside FCP to get the correct output which then worked fine.

(Anthony brown) WMV is very widely used just not for MAC users. I keep seeing FCP were talking Premiere here.

I would have to disagree, WMV is just an output format for windows, H.264 is a capture and delivery format within most cameras, WMV is not widely used cross platform and you stated has a bit rate cap, H.264 is widely used, doesn't have a cap and thats including within premier on windows. The first WMV HD samples from microsoft were just terrible and ive never seen a capture device consider the WMV format or any Blu-Ray workflow include WMV in its authoring, not saying its not possible just not common practice and i cant see the point in converting a H.264 file to a WMV via export when the h.264 file format is supported by the host delivery site, seems like an extra step for less quality and less compatability.

I mentioned an experience i had with FCP that created an issue with youtube and vimeo uploads, ive also seen this affect the overall picture quality as vimeo/youtube doesn't know what to do with the file when downsampling, just thought id mention checking the frame rate and maybe go one further and check the overall particulars that should be right with the file to see if its something as odd as what i had, doesn't matter what editor i used, its a problem thats possible with any export be it vegas, premier, FCP or Avid.

    (Anthony) WOW OK...
We can agree to disagree about H.264 and WMV. Plus I don't care what codec you like best there both just tools. If it works for you on your system then run with it. I am only offering multiple solutions for Bill.

(Bill) You can also try MPG2 the files tend to be larger for the same video quality but they work great.
