Would you ditch your hacked GH2 for a GH3?

  1. Joe Filipas Chatty!

I know this is all purely hypothetical at this point, but would you consider purchasing a GH3 if you already have a hacked GH2? My thoughts are that, for me and what I do with the camera right now, I'd be better off adding a second GH2 to my arsenal and simply using those two workhorses until I have the clout and client base to step up to the higher-end camera bracket, like a Scarlet or the next iteration of the C300, whatever that may be.

Again, this is all pure speculation as we don't even know what the next generation of cameras will be, but I guess with all the capabilities of the hacked GH2, what would it take for you to invest in new camera body instead of lenses or other peripheral gear?

I'd like to see more latitude on the gh3, not sure how they accomplish this, a better sensor maybe?
  3. Joe Filipas Chatty!

Similarly-priced cameras (like the NEX 5N/7) seem to perform a little better in low light, at least from some of the tests I've seen. What are you shooting on, Samuel?

Recently made the switch from canon to a gh2, I don't have a problem so much with the low light performance of the gh2, I just wish the sensor had more latitude, so I could retain more shadow detail in bright scenes, I can usually work around it, it's just an area I think Panasonic could greatly improve on their next camera.
  5. Bill Gill Not quite so new!

I love the footage out of the GH2 (using HBR from v1.1 firmware) but there are several things that need fixed for a GH3
    1. No gamma shift on lcd when you go into record
    2. Ridiculous iso bug
    3. No focus assist zoom with an external monitor plugged into the hdmi port
    4. Better lo-light performance
    5. Higher bit-rate with stock firmware

Having said that, I'm using my 60D less and less due to the better aliasing and moiree performance with this little beast. Awaiting the HBR hack with interest..

Out of curiosity, what ISO bug are you referring to?

Agree with you on everything else, especially #1.
  7. Samuel Johnson I'm new!

There's the iso 320,640,1250 bug which basically causes a noisier image if you switch to those isos from anything other than 400,800,1600 or 500,1000,2000 respectively, it's weird but the workaround is simple enough, The dark horizontal banding issue is what drives me completely insane most nights.
  8. Eduardo Morales Chatty!

Oh yes - THAT ISO bug. Haha, I had wiped it from my memory. I just leave my ISO on the highest setting before shutting off my GH2 and then work my way down when I boot back up again.

As for the banding, I haven't noticed that. I better look into that.

to check for it: set the camera to the highest iso possible, 24p Cinema, 1/50th shutter, then shoot a grey card (or some other solid midtone item, an offwhite color wall works), then underexpose about 2 stops and hit record, as soon as recording begins you should see it, if you change the shutter it'll move up and down the screen disappearing at 1/30 and around 1/200.

Panasonic doesn't consider this to be a defect unfortunately, I guess it's better on some cameras and worse on others though.

if they make it better than the gh2 then sure...for me the key thing would be better low light sensitivity but they keep on putting more pixels in those sensors!!
  11. Eduardo Morales Chatty!

I'm going to try this tonight, but now I'm nervous! Thanks for warning me!
  12. Hussam Moammer I'm new!

For me, Better Low light sensitivity, and perhaps 1080 60p ? that would be sweet,

What about a new video codec (less compression)?
    Dreamin...?
  14. Terra Badhe I'm new!

I'm still using the GH1, but when I'm ready to upgrade the GH3 would have to have some pretty compelling changes for me to pick it over a GH2, especially if the price drops like a stone like the GH1 did.

I had in mind something from the present, like MXF. In the future I will vote for an open source codec

From what I heard about the GH3 is that Epson is working with Panasonic on the CMOS sensor. Rumor has it that its coming out in September. Panasonic is going to have a big push with all the panasonic TV's and cameras. Panasonic is ready to release 2k or 4k HDTV sets. Will the GH3 record in 2k or 4k do not know yet.

Also rumor has it the GH3 will be a pro body weather sealed camera.

Again these are just rumors, but I really do believe the GH3 is coming in September, because one of the Panasonic reps hinted at a September release date and there was no GH3 at CES. So we might know more about the GH3 at NAB maybe.
  18. Kevin McRoberts Chatty!

    Definitely maybe.
  19. Mike Green Chatty!

Almost forgot to say the rumor with Epson is that they are making or help Panasonic with the sensor and that it will be very good in low light.
  20. Jesse Brauning Chatty!

I'm very excited for a GH3. I WAS excited for the EM-5 but since there's no 24p, I'm off that train.
