Slate apps

  1. Erik Rosenbluh I'm new!

What slate (clapper) apps to folks use on their IOS devices? Specifically with DSLRs (more specifically 5D Mark III). Have you found them useful? Are they impractical if you're a one-man/woman crew? I can certainly see how all the groovy reports they can make would be beneficial in post production. Can these apps generate reports for Avid and FCP? I've read that some of these apps can actually sync with certain cameras. I'll assume this can't be done with the DSLRs (yet).

Do you have a favorite slate app? Speaking of apps, are there any other nifty apps you like to use with your DSLR?

    Muchas gracias

In the corporate/docco world, I guess many of us are shooting by day, ingesting by night, and therefore the 'slating' of shots may be done on a scene by scene basis rather than the proper 'lets mark every take with a clap and a voice ident'.

So holding a bit of paper with an interviewee's name and affiliation scrawled on it will do most times (or a badge or a business card), and I can transfer that info into metadata back in the hotel room. I considered making a business case for buying an iPad for this sort of thing, but as a One Man Band things are busy enough at shoot time to fiddle with updating metadata in an app - and getting someone to write their name and 'tummy tag' info on a bit of paper isn't that daunting.

Synchronising audio? That's what Pluraleyes is for, right? ;-) Of course it isn't as Canon DSLR footage drifts from 1 to 2 frames off anyway, so one has to tweak. Hitting 'go' on the audio recorder, then buttoning on and off during an interview is actually a lot less intrusive than using a slate. IMHO.

But seriously, in the narrative world, I've used MovieSlate and others do to. It generates reports, does things with XML, and is more organised than I am, so should be entrusted to your nominated grown-up on the crew.

Movie Slate is not cheap but one of the better ones. Plenty of features. You can take notes and it exports xml and other things (haven't used myself) It provides flash and sound beep. You setup any data you want to record and it cycles through it. Customizable. Has special music video mode where it can play music with sync.

iPAd/iPhoen apps can be problematic when shooting outdoors. They're dimmer than ambient so you'd have to adjust exposure for the slate and/or shade it. Also make sure you don't leave your iPad/iphone in the sun between takes since they heat up and turn off.
