So, I've been working ridiculously hard on video for a little over a year now, and it is now time to look into dolly/sliders. I know I would want a Kessler that would allow me to eventually move into using the motion control systems. The Cineslider is out of the question, too big/heavy and costs too much. It would have to be the PDv2, PB-PD, or the Stealth. I don’t NEED a crank, and I don’t necessarily need to get a case or extra feet or anything like that. I guess my question is, would I be upset with myself down the line if I did not spring for the Stealth or Bloom pocket dolly, and instead got the Pocket Dolly v2? Thanks in advance! -Ken
You definitely won't be let down. You won't have a few of the added options (tension knob/crank handle) but it is still a great product.
Which v2? The Basic version or the belt drioven ones? Personally, I love the PB Pocket Dolly that I have and especially the drag control feature. My advice would be to get the best version you can afford to get right now. You may think you'll never use the additional options, but you never know what you'll need in the future. Also, the case is really handy for transporting/storing the slider.
I have the V2 PD with belt. It's the exact same thing as the Bloom version and the Steath insofar as the rail and carriage. The Stealth adds drag control and a cool name. The bloom model adds an adjustable crank, drag control, legs, a nice case, red coloring. Those extras can add up, and I think a case is an absolute minimum add on. But as far as functionality goes, aside from drag, all three models are the same. I've touched them all.
The Stealth and PB Dolly also have a bubble level and a "ruler" type thing right on there so you can tell precisely how long the move is going to be. I own the v2 PD with belt like Paul. I love it. I don't have the drag control but I adjusted the carriage to where it offers a slight bit more resistance when doing a move. Just a personal preference. Whatever you choose you're not going to be sorry.
I own the Pocket Dolly V2 with the motion control paraphernalia, and it is fantastic. My old work had a PB slider, and that was certainly nicer to use with the drag control. The crank I find to be a waste of space and money, I can never really use it to get smooth shots. As Syeed said, get the best one you can afford.
Quickly! Quickly!! for those of you who don't know the draw is going to close for the Stealth in under an hour. Why not donate to the Make-a-Wish foundation (minimum £10) and you could win the new Stealth, just don't forget to forward the email confirmation to competition@philipbloom.net Good luck!
i try to upgrade to a new slider i need something what i can easily use on Manfrotto 055XPROB i was using DIY DryLin is horrible but still u can do something so any recommendations Stealth or PB Pocket Dolly considerations what sometimes i'm by myself and have to carry a lot like camera bag tripod monopod and glidecam
I'm also trying to decide between the stealth and pb version (travelers)...Does anyone out there use the crank? Does it give a smoother movement then just pushing it? WOuld love to hear some advocates for or against...thanks!
