NTG-3 and wireless...

  1. Saad Syed Chatty!

Currently, I use an external recorder (H4N) to get my master audio, but I would like to start recording master audio directly to file via feeding a line to the camera.

So, I've been considering going with the Rode NTG-3. However, before buying a bunch of cables, I was wondering if there was anyway to successfully outfit this mic for wireless use. I was looking at a Sennheiser G3 system and was wondering if anyone has had success with this match up. I don't always like using lavs and would really like to have a wireless boom-mic option.

    Thanks.

There's a few options with the G3 system. Be careful that if you're feeding to a DSLR it doesn't autolevel the audio. Also the boom op sound really monitor what they're booming so some sort of reverse feed might be good. have a search of the JWSound forum's for details and setups.

Problem with NTG3 is it is phantom powered so it needs 48v of power. You are better off with the AA driven NTG2 then you get send a mic signal to the G3

Just tested out an NTG-3 / Sennheiser G3 / H4N combination for you as I had them to hand.

If you attach a wireless Sennheiser module to a hand held microphone and attache the reciever to the H4N it will work.

If you attach it to the NGT3 it won't because as Philip says it needs power.

Rode NTG2 with battery does work

In this case you might find the Sound Devices MM-1 works for you. It has P and T powering and headphone monitoring in one box powered by two AA batteries. perfect for the boom op. Setup will go mic/MM-1/TX

I have never used wireless boom, now will look into it. Thanks for the info RobertV and Nick Jones Media.

Thanks for all the replies! Decided to go with the NTG-2 plus G3 combo. As much as I'd like to have an NTG-3, I really want to stay wireless. Apparently, there is a superior Sennheiser XLR transmitter that actually provides phantom power. However, it's a lot more than the dongle that comes with the set.

Okay guys, bear with me in my quest to make the NTG-3 wireless, lol. I love the mic and I don't love cables. So...

So, the NTG-3 couldn't use the Sennheiser G3 dongle as the dongle doesn't provide power... so, I got to thinking...

What about putting something like a Sound Devices MM-1 into the mix?

It provides phantom power and has XLR in and out. The dongle can fit into the XLR out and transmit the signal to the receiver... right? So, here's the setup I'm thinking about:
    NTG3 -> MM1 -> G3 Dongle -> G3 Receiver -> Camera

In my mind, I think I've covered all the bases and this should work. However, things always play out a little differently in reality. Would love your thoughts on this. Thanks!

    Saad,

As you didn't mention what camera you're shooting with and I suppose it's a DSLRs (otherwise you probably wouldn't be using an external recorder to start with) my only concern with your set-up is being unable to monitor what the camera will be recording. That is if your camera doesn't have a headphone jack.

Just to point it out, as you are using a radio wireless system (G3) that doesn't use some kind of digital hybrid technology like the fancy Lectrosonics, you are even more subject to interference you'll only know it's there after you got home and listened to the footage.

You can't see that in audio meters and monitoring out of the MM-1 won't do the job as you'd need to monitor from the receiver and the G3 (at least the one that come with the kits like the EW-112p) doesn't have a headphone jack.

Just make sure you find some way to monitor what's coming into the camera (or out of it) so you don't get any nasty surprises...

My apologies - I'll be using a FS100, so I'll be able to monitor through that.

Great, so no problems there! :)

Ek3041u and Skg3000 from Sennheiser into my FMX42a by Azden works perfectly with my NTG3 by Rhode recording to my Zoom H4N. I hope you get my confusing explanation, and yes it works really good!
