Check it out!! FS700 next then hopefully BMD camera! Full Frame Shootout: Review of Nikon D800, D4 and Canon 5DmkIII
Three splendid cameras... as I mentioned in the comments, it's amazing that we'd even consider the D4 as "not quite good enough" for video use. It's still darned good. Seems like in professional video nowadays, just pick anything and you'll probably be fine. Sadly the review didn't help any sort of purchase decision and just confirmed suspicions... the 5D3 has a great internal codec and great low light performance, but needs cumbersome post-processing (or dangerous surgery) for a sharp image - which isn't a killer, as I don't normally associate full frame video with sharp detailed images anyway. The D800 has great resolution, but needs a cumbersome external recorder to utilize a better codec... which might be a killer, as one of the main points of DSLR video is compact shooting. In the end, I lean towards Canon simply because that's what producers usually specify when they're hiring DSLR-shooting freelancers. I'm sick of attempting to convey that I can match it with my GH2 or AF100. Semi-total side note... I've similarly always loved the look of full-frame video with a fast 35, and as a Panasonic m43 user, had begun pining and planning a D800 or Mk3 sidegrade or addition. I still may do that. However, I recently bought the Voigtlander 17.5/0.95, which surprisingly seems to match a lot of that aesthetic I'd aspired towards. If you still use any of your m43 gear, I'd be curious to see/read your thoughts on that declickable little chunk. Have you used one yet?
Thanks for taking time out of a busy schedule! Was going to buy one of these. Here goes (to anybody) 1) To what degree are these cameras crippled at the factory (i.e. resoution, bitrate ect) 2) Are crippled products to be accepted quietly. 3) To what degree are camera companies price fixing. No not a conspiracy theorist. Really just want to know i should be peeved or not. I know there are legitimate rationalizations for "planned obsolescence", crippled products, ect. I will point out, some of these things are downright illegal, usually kept under wraps, and never go well when the public gets wind of them.
