LED lights

I have seen a couple people using these sting type LEDs and creating larger LED panels with 600-1200 LED bulbs on them, nice thing is they can be powered by a 12 volt battery so they are very portable and don't need a power source, perfect for location shooting. Also if you mount them on foam core they are very light so you could pin them to a roof or whatever to hide them...

My question, as good as they sound for the price and the little bit of DIY work, how do you figure they would work? Would they provide enough light to be useful? Thoughts?

Do you have a link to what you're talking about? Or a picture? I can't quite visualize it.

That looks like it could very well work. According to rough (and I'm sure generous) calculations, it could put out 6000 lumens at full capacity. You would of course need to do a white balance once lit though.

I would love to have a few massive panels like these without dropping more than a grand a piece (like a 1x1), but to be honest, actually constructing them worries me. I guess if I want them, though, I'll have to travel outside my comfort zone and do some assembly. Anyone else tried making these before?

I am going to be asking a couple friends for some help in exchange for the global currency of beer

I like where your head's at. Keep us updated! For every person posting, I'll bet there's 50 more that would also love to see some results.

    That's true enough!

The good folks at Realm Pictures have created DIY kino-flo-esque LED panels in 1' x 4' sizes that they say cost about $100-$150 per panel. They are pretty much indestructible, battery powered, and submersible! This should be a link to a video blog about their design & construction: http://www.theunderwaterrealm.com/archives/363

If that link does not work, you can search out The Underwater Realm on Vimeo and look for the week 39 update.

LED lighting will eventually sell itself. The biggest problem is the cost, as costs continue to come down, they will eventually overtake every other form of lighting. They are far more economical, effective and green. There's no reason not to use LED other than the cost. For LED lights you may visit: http://www.ledlightshub.com/
