Anyone had a chance to try/see this camera? Uncompressed raw in full hd with a super 16 sensor. Made in Sweden. http://www.ikonoskop.com/dii/
Played with it last weekend. Cool camera but temperamental. HD-SDI gave up on shoot meaning that all focusing had to be done through the low res VF. The OLED display on the side is really only for framing. Seems to playback at a stuttering frame rate, something like 12-18fps. No chance of getting a focus off it. Waveform and expanded image for focus button was all over the place and sometimes worked and sometimes didn't. Until I see the images I can't really give my opinion as it was annoying but if the image holds up it could be worth it! DOF was shallow enough but that may have been down to the really nice 16mm T1.3 Superspeeds we were using!
Hi Archie, thanks for sharing your thoughts. I'm not sure if the camera is still in a beta mode or if it has been officially released. It is the cheapest raw recording camera but the 16mm sensor can be a limitation if you cannot use some high quality s16 lenses.
One thing I noticed is that currently there are quite a few 16mm lenses going for cheap because apart from the Ikonoskop 16mm is sort of on it's way out. The guy who owns all the kit picked up a set of super speeds for under £5k
I really can't see how this camera is justified at $13,000 US? Proprietary Memory, S16, 1080p RAW, 9+ stops DR.... Digital Bolex and Black Magic Design Cinema Camera (BMCC) are both overwhelming compitition at a far lesser price! BMCC: Standard SSD Drives, Closer to M4/3, 2.5k RAW, 13 Stops DR, $3,000.... Is the Ikonoskop A-Cam DII really worth $10,000 (US) more than the upcoming BMCC... (That means I could buy the new Sony NEX-FS700 and BMCC for the same price as one of these A-Cam DII's) Hmmm, I guess the proof will be in the footage?
Well the thing is that the A-cam DII was announced three years ago, when we were still talking about a cheap red scarlet. Today, I think that both red and Ikonoscop are surprised by the BMCC.
Then they need to pull a "Sony" and price drop and or included some freebies; like the addition of FREE S-Log for new F3 purchases in the US. Gotta stay competitive. Loving 2012!
One thing I find very appealing about this camera is that it uses a CCD imager with global shutter. None of the other camera's do, and the rolling shutter issues drive me crazy. Especially when the subject of the shot includes muzzle flashes, or other flashing lights.
True. On their website's gallery section however, you can find pro work with the Ikonoskop A-Cam DII and downloadable files to play with. http://www.ikonoskop.com/dii/footage/
Just wrapped on another short with this camera and an epic last week. I will link to the vimeo vids once post has had a good go on them. Also the original short I mentioned where the SDI went bust is 98% complete (although it's not that amazing, lighting continuity and focus issues all over the place) and I will post that too although I doubt it will be before june 4th as that is our hand in date for these films.
I'm NOT SURE AT ALL but I think that the Ikonoskop is all made in Sweden. And I suppose the BMDCC is made somewhere in asia. I don't want to start talking about which country has the better build quality, that's not the topic. The fact is that Sweden employees cost way more than asian ones. (sad but true) Plus it's not made at big industrial scale. (the Ikonoskop) My two cents.
Digital Bolex and Black Magic Design Cinema Camera (BMCC) are both overwhelming compitition at a far lesser price!
None of them are shipping yet. A-cam dll is not a mass product, but it has been made to order for two years.
