I've been looking at the Zacuto Striker, http://store.zacuto.com/c300-striker.html Together with the Grip relocator http://store.zacuto.com/C300-grip-relocator.html Then I should be able to use only the plate and shoulder suport if I need to pack light.
Yes, this would work, but will be pretty front heavy. When working so light, I would rather use the camera naked, out of hand, but choose a lense with IS. I've tried a few light setups, but do most of ultralight docu style work now directly out of the hand using IS lenses. Canon EFS 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM work pretty well. The c300 bottom also allows for a pretty good hand/lense position. Also setup the neck strap as short as possible so you can relax your hands when having a short break. If you need a setup for longer runs (30+ min), I would choose something like a Recoil. This would work great, but needs a additional EVF. A setup like this is on my personal wishlist for longer runs.
I agree, I have allmost that setup now, when I'm travelling, but the 70-200 4 IS instead of 2.8. Been stripping the camera down, filming hand held and resting with the neck strap. But it's starting to wear on me, I'm not 20 any more For me, the great thing with the camera is, when you strip it, is that it don't look so scary when you interview camera shy people.
True, but a Striker will probably make it worse, as have to reach out with one hand and fully support the weight with it. Maybe a shoulder mount, like the one I used for a golf shot (pic in this thread) would help and be a much cheaper solution. Carbon rods and a lighter bottom plate would help too
Actually, it would be nice to have a sturdy version of this http://image.made-in-china.com/2f0j...-Shoulder-Pad-Studio-Shoulder-Pad-KHSP-1-.jpg I have the plastic one, broken I might add, the build quality is crap, but the ergonomics are quite nice.
This new Grip Adapter from Denz might also be very helpfull for some. http://www.philipbloom.net/forum/threads/denz-grip-unit-adapter-for-canon-eos-c300-c500.3131/
I just bought the DVtec Junior and I think it feels very nice for shooting handheld. http://www.dvtec.tv/id3.html
I really look forward to the Zacuto Recoil with the new moveable shoulder piece, grip relocator and the tornado FF. They say it should be out in Jan 13, but i hope its out early. I need a shoulder rig urgently for some shoots in December but dont want to buy the shoulder piece twice. The "old" stile is at a fixed angle, so it doesn't sit as good on the shoulder as the new one probably will.
Well after using the C300 for over 12 months now " I dont use a rig" its just great to grab hold and go. I use a Glidecam HD 4000 to pull some quick smooth shots here and there... One of the most anticipated gadgets for Canon C300 users this year has been the Deitygear Mira LCD loupe. This gadget essentially transforms the integrated 1280×960 LCD screen of the the C300 into a high quality EVF. http://www.newsshooter.com/2013/04/...-the-dietygear-mira-lcd-loupe-for-canon-c300/
Also ordered a Genus Top Handle for c300. Its really one of the only ones that is a straight swap out without adding more weight, cant wait. get in touch with them as they may even have an NAB discount code for you. still a great price for a handle. http://shop.genustech.tv/products/c300-handle
I haven't used a rig w/my C300. I tend to hand hold, monopod or sticks. The Deitygear Mira looks interesting but at $695 (?) - one should jury rig a similar setup with another loupe, before buying, to make sure the setup will work and is comfortable. I noticed the GenusTech handle, too. Looks nice. The plastic handle on the C300 never tightens down %100, always has a bit of play, so if this can sit with no play then that'll be great.
GenusTech handle is on the way to me too. Should be here on monday I'll Keep you updated on if it got some Play. Looking into the Deitygear Mira LCD loupe and hope to give some personal feedback, as soon as I had a Chance to get my Hands on and work with it. First personal feedback I've heard from Nino Leitner is very promising. He will use it in a few upcomming projetcs. Also Dan Chung seems to like it very much. So it sounds like it works really well. The Price is not cheap. But as the C300 Monitor is great, you'll have a superb "EVF" when adding a good Quality loupe for a lower price. I also got my C300 since about a year and used it for various differnent stuff. Hand held works pretty well, but the camera will often be located a bit to low. For Interviews or longer events not really fun to use. So I'm still looking into a shoulder rig. Zacuto should have the Recoil with new shoulder mount and twister ready in about 4 weeks (Hopefully). Add the grip relocator and the Mira loupe and you got a freaking awesome setup without additional power needs. The C300 display will need to be moved a bit from the grip away, but with the GenuTech handle this will be a small task to perform. I'll travel and shoot two doc series across Europe this summer. I'll let you know how my final setup works while be on the road as a one man show.
If everything goes right i'll also get a Edekrone Slider Plus and a SmallHD AC7 in the near future. Will blog about those products in use with a C300 as soon as i get them in house.
Has anyone tired this combo http://www.genustech.tv/home/top-cheese-plate-for-the-c300-c500-camera + http://www.shapewlb.com/en/product/...aptor-sony-hot-shoe_242.aspx?id_page_parent=1 + http://www.shapewlb.com/en/product/...-hot-shoe-l-bracket_248.aspx?id_page_parent=1 I'm hoping this will get an EVF well forward and easily adjusted like the Sony F5/55 setups Then place the C300 on this or similar (well forward) to give weight balance on shoulder. http://www.vocas.com/accessories/base-plate-for-sony-pmw-f5-f55 Then move the C300's Monitor/audio unit to the back of the top cheese plate to bring even more weight to the back. Also one point that don't get mentioned is placing wireless radio mic behind the camera on the rails to also get weight behind. Then use http://store.zacuto.com/ENG-Grip-Relocator.html to get controls back. Has anyone tried this or some thing similar, comments. For me I'm trying to make a choice between F5 and C300 but I really need to be very confident that the C300 is possible to balance and use in the OPC (one per crew) setup, the F5 balances and sits really well. Thanks
Alternatively run an small easy rig, for long shoots. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/862995-REG/Easyrig_ERIG_MINI_Easyrig_Mini_Camera_Support.html
Thanks Mathias - I was debating the Edelkrone Slider when seeing (online) how compact it is but... a few things I have read (parts rusting very quickly, spotty customer service) gave me pause. It also seemed like it might be better for dslr's than for the C300. I already have a 3' slider but wanted something smaller and lighter. In the end I got a Kessler 2' Stealth.
