a 5D Mk II, and Mk III does not get 2k resolution. 1920x1080 is considered 1080p aka FULL HD.
2k RES is like the blackmagic cinema camera, which shoots raw. Your budget of $4000 is very low for a camera that shoots anything more than 1080p.

You would have to go buy a BMCC which is $3000 but then assuming you have no other gear.. you dont have good lenses, tripod, lighting, (sliders, jibs, etc), or good audio gear, also does not include media, (RAW takes up a lot of space youll need some good harddrives and memory for the BMCC to record onto) alsooooo you'll def need a battery solution for the BMCC which is going to cost you. Either the BMCC or a RED/Arri/Sony 4k/Ikonoskop all of which are above $10,000 for the 2k res models +.

Sorry, but save up your money. Or get a 5D Mk II, 60D or even a T4i and start investing in other gear.

Just as an aside here, what is the value of 2K to Indie film?

2K is 2048×1080, HD is 1920x1080 - 128 pixels in the horizontal dimension, a little over 6% more pixels, as a DCP delivery format, usually made by downscaling 3K, 4K or now 5K images - or even (egad) upscaling HD. So for a true 2K delivery format, we'd be shooting beyond 3K which puts us in the Camera Exotica camp, whereas a lot of Post folks do a quiet little upscale.

Is this worth the extra expense and pain to the Indy film maker working on own/microbudget work?

    This isn't a rhetorical question - I'm genuinely interested :)
