Shot with the Panasonic Lumix GH1. Using stock lens for 2/3rd of it, and PL mount Ultra Primes. Ungraded. Filters supplied by Tiffen, Matte Box and supports supplied by Genustech.tv. They make a perfect weight and sized Matte Box for DSLRs.

  • AWESOME!!

  • Genius as always! Can’t wait to buy the camera!

  • Your work is always great! Thanks so much for giving us quality work done with the GH1. I will save this. :o)

  • Awesome work Mr. Bloom. Really shows the potential of the GH1 when used by the right hands. Glad Panasonic liked it.

  • Was not really impressed by this like I usually am by your other things. Though I watched the middle version, maybe the high version would be a bit better I don’t know.

  • It’s quite amazing how far technology has come in the last 10 years ago. Back then you’d have a hard time seeing the shimmer on those needles! Nice job, Philip!

  • Wow! This is one of your best to date Philip!

Glad you didn’t grade it, because it needs no grading, – it looks stuniing the way it is. Technically one thing that sets this one apart from a lot of your other stuff is the way highlights doesn’t blow out, and when they do blow out the clipping is soft and pleasing.

Could you tell us a little about that? Did you use any filters to achieve this? Is it just the nature of the GH1? Or is it the lack of Magic Bullet (Which 9 times out of 10 adds contrast, and thus superwhites)?

    • I used loads of filters. Check out my previous blog about the shooting of this piece to see everything I used.

  • Love the widescreen presentation. Very cinematic, and you mentioned that it was ungraded but I love the colours in this. Fantastic!

  • Awesome stuff!
Had a chance to check out the GH1 a bit today at a photo/video expo, and it looks like quite a lot of punch in that package. Took a bit of getting used to and found the directional keys a little hard to use with my big thumbs..and the LCD/EVF seemed a little ‘weird’ for the lack of a better word…i like the LCD on the 5D MkII better, personally.

Other than that, I really need to learn what plus’/minus’ of the micro 4/3 format is… any of your own observations? (other than the 2x factor with full frame lenses?)

Aside from that, it’s obvious to see why they were so blown away at the product launch you twittered about the other day… your video looks absolutely stunning!

    Cheers,

  • Hi Philip, what is your opinion comparing the Canon EOS 5D MarkII and the Lumix GH1 and what lens would you recommend if choosing the Canon?

  • I am using Lumix GH1 for some in the city dusk photography and so far images were stunning. Everything I shot was at ISO 800 and there was no problem with noise and through added shutter speed and image stabilization photos were very sharp, although they were shot without tripod, just from the hand.

If you want, check my photo blog.

  • Will you buy a red GH-1 when you get your own, or will you get black?

Just wondering how intrusive the colour was, as it seems they got the look in red pretty spot-on

  • I am really wondering about how you focused at second 35 when the focus is first on the plant and then on the rock climber. Did you use manual focus?

  • this is great! I love the shots of the snake, and the timing of the edit all together was really good.

  • Joshua Tree is probably one of my favorite places! Nice video! I plan on going down there for the August 12-14 meteor shower and run time-laps. If I find the time.

    Kuddos on the video! :)
