It’s submission time for the second almost annual Vimeo awards! (The last one was in October 2009). It was an amazing event last year and next year’s one will be even better…why? More categories!

So what is the deal? Grants of $5,000 will be awarded to the winners of each of the 13 categories, and a grant of $25,000 will be presented to the winner of the Best Video Award. Entrants can submit any original work that premiered anywhere online between July 31, 2010 and February 20, 2012, or any original work that has never been premiered. So that means if you don’t have something great now, you have two months to get cracking. I would enter but I can’t. I am judging one of the categories: Lyrical, which is VERY me! Below is what Lyrical is all about…and the other 12 below it.

The only downside is it will cost you $20 to enter, but just $5 if you are a plus or pro member. $5…that’s not even my Venti Triple Skinny cappuccino from Starbucks!…Entries are now open, click here for more info on the general rules.

I will be at the awards ceremony too which is in June. Last time I was in NY was for the last Vimeo Awards!

To tie in with the release of the rather nice new slider from Kessler Crane and the re-launch of my website, Eric Kessler has generously come up with the idea of giving one away in conjunction with a fund raising for a charity very close to his heart. The Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Make-A-Wish grants children with terminal or life threatening illnesses wishes to give them hope. To give them some joy when they have none. It’s a really special charity.

To be in with a chance of winning a Stealth all you need to do is donate $10 or more (more is better!) to any of your local Make A Wish chapter and send a receipt of it to this address. The fundraiser will last 2 weeks and I will make the live draw on Feb 12th. More details to come. This is a world wide competition so doesn’t matter where you live!

About the slider: The Stealth is an all black hybrid between the basic pocket dolly and the top of the range Philip Bloom Slider.  Whereas my one comes with a case, feet, flat head adaptor and crank. This a build your own system (not possible to add the crank), with a starting price of $799.95 for either the 2 foot traveler or 3 foot standard.

EDIT: I will be doing the live draw a bit later than planned. The lovely people at Switronix have given me two of their new lights. One to try out and the other to give away. Like in previous giveaways, I want to try and raise money for charity with it and as I will be raising money for Prostate Cancer research all November with “Movemeber” it makes perfect sense to tie them together!

Here are some photos and specs of the lights. I have only had a little play with it and it’s pretty sweet. I am shooting a mini doc tomorrow on the Sony NEX5N with this light as my main light so I can report back on how good it is. Lovely having mixed temperature available and it’s very well made, bright and with a nice even light!

Back in September I met up with Damien from Australian based RODE in Santa Monica when I was there doing a workshop and he told me about the new Video Mic Pro. I received one to test out in November and used it on my penultimate Movember film at the Gala party in a crazy loud environment with my GH2 and it performed spectacularly. An on camera shotgun had no right to sound as good as this. With it’s +20db sound option this has strong powerful sound! Unfortunately I was under an embargo on revealing the mic until it was ready for sale, well that embargo has just been lifted and I can now officially announce it!! Hurrah!

It’s smaller than the VIdeo Mic, the perfect size for your DSLR, has better rubber bands for suspension and overall sounds A LOT better! For more tech specs check out the data sheet further down this blog. It will retail for around $230 or so and dealers should be getting stock in 2 weeks or so..

RODE are the company bringing me to Australia in February for a series of DSLR workshops which I am really excited about. They have also incredibly generously donated TEN, yes TEN Video Mic Pros to readers of my blog. I have been trying to figure out a way to give them away and the best way I can do it is do something that can help people. I am sure you are aware of the devastating floods that have hit Queensland. There is a fund to help the people affected by this disaster and all you need to do to have a chance to win one of these awesome mics is donate something to the fund. The minimum is just a dollar, but I am sure we can all spare a little bit more than that. Every little helps. Filming at Movember Gala with the then secret Mic!

What was my first computer? Well being an old fart it was a Sinclair zx Spectrum 48k, I then graduated to a Commodore 64, then an Amstrad CPC 464, the a CPC 6128 then a Commodore Amiga then I was a PC user for years.

The internet was not what it is today back then, my email address was something like 32423421@compuserve.com, but it was all very exciting. Then when Apple brought out the Cube I fancied it and bought one. Sure it was a flop but I fell in love with the design, I then bought my first laptop, the fisher price looking first ibook. Since then I have Apple all the way. I learnt to cut NLE witrh FCP using an ibook, self taught and it has been non stop from then on. Whenever I use a PC it drives me nuts. The MAC OS is so nice now that everything else seems a chore. BUT, I am not a fanboy of any sort. I am always open to new ideas and competing products in every field. I love my Apple products and am unlikely to switch as I am so heavily invested in them with a Mac Pro, big iMAC and 2 MacBook Pros but HP challenged me to use their EliteBook 8740w MobileWorkstation for a month. No strings attached. I hesitated. Sounded like a lot of hassle and stress to me, but they said they would give me one to as prize to giveaway on my blog if I tried out their laptop. It was too good to turn down. What is there to lose?

It’s 17″, got 8gb RAM, an i7 1.73ghz chip and an nvidia Quadro 5000m graphics card.

So I have installed the Adobe suite and will be fiddling with my Leica photos on it, doing some Premiere CS5 editing finally on it and see how well it copes with it all. I will still use my Macs for professional work as it’s too risky when I am so unfamiliar with the software but for my personal stuff I am going for it.

So how do I give away the brand new laptop as a prize? What I really don’t want is whomever wins to just flog it as soon as they get it for the money. I want whomever wins it to really need it and use it. So HOW do I do that? Well watch the video below to see how! My dad had a moustache for most of my childhood. These days he has gone Euro-villain and has a goatee, but for me a ‘tache always reminds me of my dad. When I shaved my beard off last year I left a ‘tache to see what I looked like and found myself staring at my dad in the mirror. SCARY! I shaved it off 30 seconds later!

To cut a long story short, it’s Movember time again and if you don’t know what that is it’s when men (and oddly women) grow a moustache during the month of November to support The Prostate Cancer Charity. A very worthy cause as my beloved Grandfather Daniel died from it back in 2001.

So, despite the worry that I will end up looking like Ron Jeremy or Ron Burgandy for a whole month I am going to grow a ‘tache for charity and encourage as many of you as possible to do the same!! I have started a team on the official website, so please sign up and join this important cause! Let’s have the biggest and best team of the lot!! Even if you are a woman, join up…be creative! If you don’t want to or can’t grow one then please sponsor us!

To add some fun to this I will be taking photos and video of myself every day, to make a film of my ‘tache growing and you should all do something creative too! Let us completely overwhelm them with epic films of our moustaches!! No prize for best video, just the satisfaction of helping a good cause and having some fun at it. Wow…what an amazing response!! 42 films in just two weeks. Totally overwhelmed for what I expected to be a silly little competition has become an epic contest with some incredible filmmaking and creativity. I am utterly speechless and humbled. Eric Kessler too. If we could we would give one to each and every one of you a PB slider.

Honestly this is the hardest thing I have ever judged. Tricky too as I know some of the filmmakers who entered, some of them very well. I put my totally objective hat on and refused to be biased. Each time I saw a new one come in I thought, that’s the winner then I saw something else and I loved that too. Eric loved the one where every word was his name of course

Well we have two prizes to give away. 1 pocket dolly Philip Bloom edition and the Red Giant Software Magic Bullet Suite. 1st prize gets the slider, runner up gets the amazing software suite. Eric and I had a lot of back and forth over this. Petter Misje made two awesome entries, the song was brilliant and funny (but mostly appreciated by guys and it made Eric puke at the suggestion of the song!), Andrew Gupta made two fantastic entries too…David Komer made a great little film, Travis Guerra made a funny film where he still insists I stole his ideas , Karen Abad & Angeline Gragasin made an INSANE film inspired by the INSANE Isabella Rosselini Green Porno series on Sundance Channel, Eric found that very disturbing but I think he secretly enjoyed hearing Angeline as Isabella as me having an orgasm over his picture…SO WRONG!!! Loved the TV shop by Sebastian Rombout, very clever indeed! Josh Alden made an epic film, Sara Parker made a very clever little piece in a very short time…the list goes on, the quality was just exceptional. PLEASE watch them all. They were great. For those interested- camera is 7D and lens is Sigma 30mm f/1.4. Lighting was all with one reflector (with two-shot a composite of 3 takes with reflector moved). I forgot the mic model- but it was going into the Zoom H4n. Rack Focus was done by hand while watching lilliput monitor. Tripod was non-fluid-head. Edited in FCP with effects shot (done by Eli Veffer) in AE. Script was written in Final Draft AV. Headband was drawn on an old cutup t-shirt using premium crayola markers- by my wife (Inessa Komer). Ninja Turtles shirt was bought at Target in the States

So who won…it was so hard. I kept on tossing it between “Bloom Porno” and “To Philip With Love” and the fact Peter made two great films was swinging it his favour. His song was awesome, the singer was lovely with a lovely voice. It was my winner for a long time. But the work that went into “Bloom Porno” was so amazing. The attention to detail was beyond brilliant, from the replacement of my banner photo to cut outs from my short films. Amazingly written and performed by Angeline  combined with Karen’s golden touch as a filmmaker swung it their way in the end, which made me feel awkward as I know them so well. But should I deny them first prize because of that? That seemed unfair. Eric agreed and the amount of views of the film dwarfed all the others on Vimeo so it felt the right thing to do…I hope you agree that it was just superb filmmaking on every level and especially if you watch the inspiration for it. The fact it took the piss out of me cracked me up. I take the piss a lot and if you can’t take it then don’t dish it out and the girls laid into me completely and it cracked me up. So girls. You win my slider. You are gonna have to cut it in half though am afraid…just the one!! Ouch!

Petter, sorry mate. SO close. It was just genius, both of them but you were beaten by a hair. Literally a hair. I hope the Magic Bullet Suite you win is good compensation, it’s amazing and contains so much great stuff and it costs $800 to buy!! if you want a PB dolly, drop me an email and I will get you the best discount I possibly can and move mountains for you as I feel so bad as yours was my winner for a long time!

I should have launched this competition a few days ago when my new Slider was released, anyway..better late than never. Both myself and Eric were a bit shocked when we put them up for sale and they sold out within 12 hours. More are due later this month so keep an eye out on the site for availability by clicking on the banner ad at the top of the page…In the meantime here is something to keep you occupied!

This is inspired by Harold Green, Larry Westfall and Brian Potter who have made two very silly but funny shorts about wanting Kessler Crane gear. Harold actually scored my bad hair day short coincidentally.

Anyway, I have convinced legendary scrooge and lover of bad pop music Eric Kessler (kidding!) to give away either a full size or traveller length Philip Bloom Slider (sounds VERY wrong I know…then so does a Philip Bloom pocket dolly!) which is worth $1095!!!
