Upcoming Australian DSLR Workshops

I am currently working with RODE Microphones on bringing my DSLR workshops to Australia. So we have the best info on where and what you want from these workshops please write your comments below. We are looking at end of Jan/ beginning of Feb 2011 for these. The more info you put down and the more interest there is the more chance it will happen!!

Thanks and see you down under! It’s the number one on my list of countries to visit. Once I have done the workshops I plan to say on for 2 or 3 week and just explore!!

  1. Hi Philip, Glad to hear you are coming to Oz. I’d love to go to a workshop in Sydney but don’t know if I can afford it at the moment 🙁 Rode’s Sydney office is a good central location.
Sydney, the harbour, coast and Blue Mountains World Heritage Area all offer fantastic photo/video opportunities. Cheers

  2. Please try to host it in Sydney or Melbourne. Brisbane is also good, but I think you’d get more of a response in those two cities.

Put me down as totally in and thanks for thinking of us Aussies, Philip!

  3. Would love to see you come to Perth, Phil. Plenty of good locations, the Perth Convention Centre would be good if you can nab a booking — central, good facilities and the smaller rooms would suit. Plus we can walk 1 minute to the river or center of the CBD to try get some footage!

As for the workshop? “Rigs on a budget”, post techniques for working with moire/flicker/aliasing (where possible), some time-lapse stuff, and general techniques would great to see.

  4. Just a bit of a jump to the left and you will be in New Zealand , now that would please me no end!!. But if you cant make that happen ( trust me you would love it here) sydney would get my vote and i will have to get my flights booked!!

  5. I would recommend coming to Perth, but I have a feeling there will be more demand in Sydney/Melbourne. I would like to learn more about the best way to use my DSLR to film what and what not to do. Where are the limits with these cameras and what accessories are a must and what is just a waste of money. Also learning some creative story telling techniques would nice too.

    Thanks, Philip

  6. Hey Phil. Melbourne, Australia would welcome you with open arms. We have already had several DSLR film-makers come down, but unfortunately they tend to deal with the more basic aspects of the technology and how to adapt for those coming from film, or high end digital. Therefore we are desperate for an advanced workshop solely focusing on this technology in Melbourne, also a great chance to pick your brain. Thanks.

Post Script: In Melbourne these are generally run out of Sun Studios, great photographic company who support DSLR DP’s and filmmakers, however they also tend to be extremely pricey as they deem it as a more exclusive studio environment.

Thanks and hopefully we will see you in the not to distant future.

  7. U must come to Sydney Mr Bloom, I say after purchasing the 5D DVD an update to the current material on that disc & by that time hopefully we will see a Sony & Panasonic rival to the 5D. Can’t wait!

  8. Hey Philip!

Great to hear you are coming to Aus. I would love to come along and meet you and attend your workshop. Any chance of a trip down to Tasmania? Any time during Jan/Feb. Or Melbourne isn’t too far for us Taswegians.

  9. I am totally up for any workshop that you might run in Australia. I live on the Central Coast of NSW so would love if you ran a workshop here, but I’d be prepared to travel to either Newcastle or Sydney.
Not really too sure what to request of content to cover, but steer away from the basic information that is already in your training DVDs, lets dive into using Kessler Crane gear, how to find the best support rig for the situation, lots of hands on stuff. I think most Australian video pros are used to working out most things from the web, something like this is our chance to get hands on training.

  10. Hi Philip – looking forward to these workshops! I’m guessing the major cities are probably already locked in…but just a reminder that Canberra is also on the way from Sydney to Melbourne! 😉

  11. Hi Philip – About time you came to visit us 🙂

My suggestion as far as location goes is probably Sydney or Melbourne. I think those places have the largest amount of DSLR shooters and would be best for the numbers.

Without offending others in Australia, I feel that Sydney or Melbourne are the logical choices. Probably favouring Sydney actually and yes I’m biased cause I live here in Sydney. 🙂

A popular studio to use would be
http://www.sunstudiosaustralia.com . This facility would be perfect for your workshop. This studio is both in Sydney and Melbourne and is fairly central.

Lastly, you can contact the AVPA in Australia who would be your best ticket to help organising and advertising it all.. http://www.avpa.com.au/

  12. Hey Philip,
You need to get down to Melbourne for sure. Really interested in how you decide which shots best tell the story. Storytelling tips rather than equipment porn. And also how your movies never seem to be a bunch of random clips cobbled together like mine do. Must. Learn. Secret.

  13. Excellent! Make sure Melbourne is on your itinerary! Have been following you since the beginning, be great to have you down here!! Personally i’m keen on getting into more time-lapse/stop motion, esp with a Kessler rig, but am a full time shooter so will love to pick your brain on cam setup/workflow too. Be middle of summer, make sure you pack plenty of those funky Tees!

  14. Great! I hope you do make it down here to Melbourne.

I got heaps out of your training vids. Not sure what you teach in your classes, I think doing a series of ‘real world’ lighting set ups would be awesome. Going deeper into exposure/metering, colour temp etc…No one seems to be doing that here with DSLR.

These folks run a successful event every year at Melbourne Uni in early Jan. http://www.summerfilmschool.com/
They may be able to help promote or work in with you. Just a thought. It would be a good place to announce your courses.

Whatever you cover, COUNT ME IN!

    1. Yes I agree with what you say about control of exposure/colour temp etc. I did a music video with the RED One, and colour matching was vastly different, even when balanced at 5200K (daylight)

Some advanced tutorials would be great for the ones that already have seen your training videos (esp the 7D one)

Come to Melbourne!!! Arrive in time for the Aust Open Tennis at the end of Jan, The St Kilda Festival in 6-14 Feb and maybe the Boxing Day Test at the MCG (if you are here early enough)

I’ll shout you a steak sandwich and a pint at The Napier. I’m a big fan of your blog and your work.

  15. A Philip Bloom workshop down under would be really terrific. Here in Brisbane the DSLR shooting game is really starting to take off. As a film student the dSLR’s have become a huge part of the education (we use video up until the last year of university), however the education of these incredible camera’s has not carried over to the course work as yet.

Brisbane is yet to have store that will carry rigs and accessories for the dSLR range. The Indie rigs have been taken up as a product for one store and are making sales. Some hands on with the other kits and products would be great for the video community. Sydney has take up the rigs more so than Brisbane. since Patrick Moreau’s last visit to Sun Studio’s in Sydney, the Zacuto range has become available to rent from them.

Australia has incredible beauty, which I anticipate would look incredible taken from the Bloom perspective. Hope that you take time to explore Australia and what it has to offer.

  16. Hey do it! Us Australian’s down under miss out on everything and i cannot tell you how pumped I would be to learn from you! Hobart or Melbourne would be the go. Hope to see you here down under.

  17. Philip, Long time reader, first time commenting.
defiantly a big following for the DSLR movement down here, I work as a freelance cameraman around Sydney and have watched with excitement (in my short television career) a shift towards utilising these great little tools as not only a solidly performing b-camera but also as a main camera.. would be interested to get your view/ideas on workflow and a workflow for multi camera situations ..
have really appreciated your time and dedication to keeping this blog up to date and interesting
    JB

  18. Hey Phil,
It’d be great to have a workshop on the gold coast in queens land. We have 50km of beautiful beaches and plenty of characters along with some of the best surf in the world! Would be great!

  19. I’m interested!

Surely you’ve got to do Sydney! Do you need more specific places within Sydney?

I’m really interested in just taking my stuff to the next level. Already had a decent amount of experience working with HD DSLRs but I need to finesse how to work really effectively as a one man team.

  20. G’Day!

Great news… I’m down here in Melbourne, and we’d love to see you visit our city, take in the great sights, enjoy the trams, the food, the coffee, the shopping, the parks and of course instill your knowledge upon us down here.

  21. Wow! thats awesome news! I live in Brisbane, and we have a great filmmaking/photography community. I’m keen to start shooting a little project using my GH1 next year, and would kill to do a workshop with a guru. Tips on shooting around some of the shortcomings of DSLRs, better workflow, lens choice, better/optimal footage etc. would be amazing! Hope to see you down here soon 🙂

  22. Awesome Phil! – Would be happy to have you in Sydney! (many would believe me!)

As for what Myself and friends would be after –

Having watched your 5D/7D dvds, I guess going further than the basics – more in depth on shooting in particular environments + lens choices / camera setup for specific locations… getting more out of DSLR audio / seperate sound etc.. ( maybe a small shoot out and about somewhere – get some tips on the fly / have some fun actually shooting )
and maybe a little session on post issues / improving workflow + tips for timelapse and anything else…

Lastly – Would really love big Q&A + chat session thrown in for good measure!

P.S you should hit MILLER up here as well as their HQ is just up the road from me – maybe get them to co-sponsor the workshops with rode?

    hope any of that helps!

    Cheers

    seb

  23. Love your work mate. If you coming to Australia, would love to see if we can get you some DOP work shooting fo us at Seven.

The majority of the tv industry is based out if Sydney, then to a smaller extent Melbourne, so probably best to focus on those 2 locations.

  24. A session at Gold Coast (QLD) would be awesome! Beach, sun and surf;) Let’s hit up those zooms and capture surfers at Snappers rock and D’Bah;) Maybe some underwater shots=P
    Cheers

  25. Come down to MELBOURNE Philip! I have been following you since the 7D video! I had never owned a camera before then, and now I shoot for a living using 7D’s! I would love to sign up for a workshop! that would be amazing!! Melbourne or Sydney would make sense!

  26. Melbourne sounds great! It has electricity AND trams. You’ll be impressed for sure! They also sell coffee there, how unusual, how very, very, very cool…
While you are there do not blink and miss the culture, or the three lanes they have.

  27. As we said on twitter (@djisupertramp) i’ll be in Sydney from the end of january,so please come to Sydney in Feb,it’d be pretty cool !
I’ll also buy my slr camera soon,so i really wanna be at your workshop !
I come from France to Australia,so please come there ! It’d be a perfect start of my 2 years filming trip all around oceania.
🙂 Hope to you there !

  28. Must visit Melbourne! It is the art & sport capital of the country, and has the strongest short film community in the country. Plus there’s plenty of cool architecture and places for a look that is known as exclusively Melbourne. I know that a few popular drama’s made in Melbourne airing currently have used 5d’s here and there so i’m sure that’ll grab interest too.

Sydney is the other obvious choice, has a very strong TV community who would eat this up.

I think some advanced session would be great, but some basics should always be thrown in because everyone does things their own way. A discussion on post workflows would be great too.

    Can’t Wait!

  29. That’s awesome news! Make sure you come to Melbourne. There’s a thriving indi film scene here and we’d love to learn from the master of DSLR film making. I Just invested in a 5D for my video work so I’m in the process of making the transition from HDV to DSLR video!

  30. I’m studying Film Production at SAE Insitute Byron Bay (about 2 hours south of Brisbane). An awesome campus and location, and I’m sure the large group of 7D users (including myself), other students, as well as our film lecturers here will be thrilled to have you! Plus, it’ll be summer. What’s better than summer in Byron Bay 😀 (p.s. great time-lapse opportunities from the lighthouse down here!)

    1. Would be very keen to catch a workshop in Perth! Give the most isolated city in the world some love!!

Either way, good to see you’re heading down here! If you do decide to swing by Perth i’m sure the crew at SAE institute, were I study, will be very hospitable. 🙂

  31. Come to Hobart Tasmania, compared to the other capital cities it’s pretty small, but we have some of the most amazing scenery here. You’d love Hobart city, Cradle Mountain, Franklin river…

  32. Hi Philip,

I’m certainly interested in Australian workshops, and I emailed you about it back on July 13th this year. I’ve been involved with organising local photography workshops.

I’m in Newcastle, two hours north of Sydney. We have quite a vibrant local pro-photography group who’d be interested, and there’s also a fair bit of video production locally, who I could get the word out to as well.

Would love to know what number of attendees + costs are involved.

    Cheers,
    Josh

  33. Boom! Bloom’s coming Down Under!

Well its not April so its no joke, great news mate – clearly we’re all excited that you’re coming and i believe you won’t want to leave! No no… seriously!

Sydney’s where its at!! City, Harbour, Blue Mountains, The best Beaches! Mind you the Melbourne lane ways come a close 2nd for uniqueness 😛

Fox Studios is home to Australian Film TV Radio School with studios/theatre available just a stones throw from the city or another is Screen Australia studio/screening theatre (but your a lil out of the city for here), few small studios in Artarmon/St Leonards. It’d be ideal to be in the city though for shooting, maybe hotel function rooms? Depends if its for meet ups or workshops i guess.

Can’t wait! Will be Good Times!

  34. A vote to include Brisbane.

How about some focus on higher level production and workflows. Look at various PL mount options, working with focus pullers and grips. Get some top DOP’s who are shooting clips and tvc’s on this gear. Go through the ACS?

  35. Very interested! I would think that Sydney or Melbourne (Melbourne would be a great excuse to check out the great ocean road which is epic) would be the obvious choice for a meet but the N.T. is a must if you like to explore.

  36. Looking forward to meeting you in Oz – I;m sure your tour down under will be a huge success!

I am part of an organization called the Australian Video Producers Association http://www.avpa.com.au that could be of help as it is national organization with HQ in Melbourne and strong member branches in Sydney and Adelaide. Would love it if you come to one of our monthly meetings in Melbourne too! lol. If I can be of any assistance please let me know.

Some good suggestions for locations above. In addition, when Still Motion did their first Evolution workshops in Oz earlier in this year, in Melbourne (and I think Sydney also) it was held at Sun Studios http://www.sunstudiosaustralia.com Depending on your planned numbers this could be useful for hands on style workshops.

    Cheers!

  37. Please come! I live in Sydney and always wanted to join you on one of your workshops overseas. This is great news! We’d love to have you. I’d rather have you come Down Under than Ophra, though it’s super cool that she’s coming soon. 😀

  38. Well….Australia’s a big place – I’d suggest doing a couple of workshops on the east coast (Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane), and also doing 1 on the west coast in Perth (which is where I live).

Heaps of DSLR shooters in every city – so you’re workshops would be a success anywhere!

  39. Melbourne would be great. If you did make it down here I am sure I could get the fine folks at Adobe Asia Pacific to want to do something with you, Im an Ambassador with them and would be happy to threaten them ;). I missed you in LA by two days last week, very unimpressed with my own lack of timing 🙂

  40. Phil, I am so stoked that this will be happening. Honestly I feel you will need one in nearly all capital cities. However… ensure to get to Brisbane!!! Definetly! Love the work, keep it up mate!

  41. Philip, Adelaide is full of DSLR film makers and has a great indi film making tradition. Its also got some spectacular sights, all within a days drive, such as the Flinders Ranges. Its a special Australian state, when it comes to quintessential Australian Outback films, such as Wolf Creek, The Light Horseman, Breaker Morant, all of that culture, Storm Boy, The Tracker, all of these and more from South Australia. The SA Film Corporation has a great history of creating and fostering some of Australias most important films.

If its good enough for Mel Gibson, it must be good enough for P.Bloom right….

There is a great Sony dealer, the largest broadcast specialist in the state who are now starting to move into DSLR support for film makers. They are called AV-Central. You could easily hold a workshop at their great facility, if you communicate with them about it, I am sure they’d consider supporting it.

  42. Just an update. I emailed around, and got some feedback on a Newcastle workshop. You can see one comment from Doug above, and I also have emailed interest from:

    – a photography lecturer, and he knows of 4 students
    – 4-5 other photographers.

  43. Wow, that’s great news Philip! We are planning to visit Oz (from new Zealand) in late Jan/early Feb so we’ll allow more time now. Of course if you also come to New Zealand I will be able to go to both workshops! Fingers crossed that your workshop is in Sydney or Brisbane when we are over.

  44. Definitely you’ve got some interest, Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne are the population centres but there is a lot of Australia.

And seeing you’re coming all this way you should see as much of it as you can.

Dont forget to experience some of the ‘Top End’ of Australia. Kakadu National Park, (and some other parks that arent as well known but much better – from experience), Aboriginal Arnhem Land, Crocodiles, Ancient Rock Paintings and then down to the centre of Oz for Ayers Rock and the Olgas with lots in between.

I’d be more than happy to help out with anything you need to make your trip happen. We’ve done it for many production companies up here and it’d be great to meet you.

  45. If you are gonna come all the way over it really should be an East & West coast tour. Brisbane & Melbourne (Sydney if you can fit another stop in) then over to Perth.

A massive DSLR ‘road-trip’ would be awesome, just some stop overs in smaller towns/citys so people get a chance to meet you & workshops in the bigger ones. I’m sure there’s plenty of DSLR shooters that could organise events (big or small) all over Australia, and many that would/could undertake part of the road-trip as well.

It would also give you an opportunity to shoot some amazing footage in the variety of locations Australia has to offer.

  46. Hi Phillip,

  47. Hey Philip,
we’d love to see you in Perth if you make it this far. The food is great and so is the beer! Happy to show you around. (Just make sure you pack your bathers – Jan/Feb is perfect beach weather.. 30 – 40C)

  48. Would be terrific if you came to Sydney as I’d like to attend and that’s where I happen to live. I’m new here but from what I can tell Sydney is one of the bigger cities. I also think it would piss Melbourne off, which is kind of cool because the two seem to like to fight over artistic stuff like this.

  49. Hi Phillip

I have Followed you for some time now and really like what you put out onto the intertubes.

I am a British citizen currently residing in Wellington, New Zealand.
I think turning up here in NZ whilst you’re in the area, would be good for yourself… you really should not leave Australasia without a trip to New Zealand’s South Island – Trust me !!

I will be in Melbourne by the time you come this way – and would definitly book into a workshop, I’ll bring friends too !

  50. No one has mentioned my hometown, Alice Springs:
    – Most centrally-located spot in the nation.
    – Will be a new experience for many people
    – Desert Park wildlife photography mecca in town
    – Hotel room to the Macdonnell Ranges, amazing landscapes, wildlife in only 10 minutes, and Uluru in a few hours
    – Pioneering Central Australian Aboriginal Media Assn and PAW Media Assn. – – Ideal meeting place at Araluen Cultural Precinct
    – Not just another big city on the coast

  51. …and if you a need a hand with organisation/planning drop me a line. My wife Lindy has been a conference & event manager for many years. Events ranging from 50ppl upto 15,000.

  52. Sunshine Coast – would love to buy you a beer!! 😉 If not, Brisbane.

Unfortunately for you, Australia is such a large country, Im not sure 2 or 3 weeks would do justice… Any chance you may consider extending your visit to do more workshops in more areas??

  53. if you’re making the trip down to Australia why not pop over to New Zealand for a workshop or 2?? Plenty of great Lord of the Rings type locations to test your 5D on! Peter Jackson will be in town shooting The Hobbit about then too!

  54. Hi Phillip!

Adelaide has a small but dedicated community of film makers and cinematographers who have REALLY embraced the DSLR thing and our ACS branch has held DSLR trade nights to amazing turnouts! We would love to see you!

  55. Hi Philip,

    What wonderful news!
It would be great if you could include some workshops in Brisbane, the capital of the beautiful ‘sunshine state’ of Queensland!
Really looking forward to the prospect of meeting you and learning HEAPS…

Thanks. We’re keeping our fingers crossed,
    Pancho.

  56. Hi Philip

I live in the Brisbane Area. I go to a film school on the Gold Coast (Bond University) and there would be about 25 students including myself who would be interested in coming to your workshop. But obviously being film students we don’t have a lot of money. So how much would it cost?

    Regards

    Daniel Bunker

  57. Hello,

I am the Alumni Coordinator for Australia and New Zealand SAE Institute & Qantm College, and a moment ago a number of our senior Film students were all standing around my office talking to a colleague about you and this possible tour to Australia, and how awesome it would be etc (there was a general excitement and vibe around it all) so I butted in to ask about it.

If you do come to Australia, it could be possible for us to organize workshops in all of our Film Making Centers in our region (Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Byron Bay & Auckland).

I am currently arranging a workshop tour for a music producer, so Im sure it would be possible to arrange something like this to coincide with your Australian trip.

I am fairly certain that a large proportion of the students and film local industry who would be interested in this, it could be something that we offer to Public, Students and Alumni members.

Please feel free to contact me anytime

    Amy Wiltshire
    a.wiltshire@sae.edu

  58. I met you at a workshop in Dublin. Last year I think? Anyhow, I am now in Adelaide and there are a load of people here who would love to meet you and hear what you have to say. So, Adelaide, South Australia – lock it in 😉

  59. hey Philip
come to Adelaide, we would love your workshops here. I am a student in MAPS (Media and Production Skills) where we have used DSLR cameras to shoot short films, all year. They are just awesome.
We have much interest in film and in Adelaide, we have the SA Film Corp, Urtext, ACS (Australian Cinematographers Society), MRC (Media Resource Centre) MAPS (Media and Production Skills) AV Central Products and Services and Picture Hire Australia all with active members working on short films with DSLR cameras.
We have wild southern ocean beaches, outback desert and native bushland and ranges…
you would love it here scenically. Spread your visit east, central and west, then you will have the best view of our great land.
can’t wait to attend your workshops
    cheers big ears
    Sharon
