My live talk for Canon about the relevance of the DSLR and how the 4K 1DC fits in

This is a recording of my talk at the Broadcast Video Expo at Excel where I was talking for Canon about the relevance of DSRLs and where the 1DC fitted into this.

Canon asked me to if I was interested in doing this talk back in December, they wanted the emphasis on the strengths of 1DC. The problem is I told them was I had not shot with the 1DC so it was impossible for me to talk about it in any way at all. They understood of course and said they would get me a 1DC to try when I got back to England.

So when back in England I got the 1DC to try and I filmed a review with it. In fact I loved it so much I ended up trading my 1DX in for a 1DC.

Before I agreed to talk for Canon at the show I had to know what sort of thing they wanted me to say. I also said I would do it only if I could be totally upfront about the cons not just the pros. They said absolutely otherwise they may as well just get one of their reps to do the talk. They wanted my independent, unbiased opinion. That was essential for me.

The talk was hugely popular. I did 6 of them. 2 of them a day and there was a massive queue to get in for each one, too many people flatteringly (helps that is was free!)

I think this was the 1st one so not the best one but what can you do? Also it is a bit rushed as I only had 45 minutes and I had to be out sharp so it gets very rushed near the end…

You can see the videos included in this talk embedded below. The only one that I don’t have online at the moment is the DSLR highlights reel.

If you are near Leeds, Belfast or London in October I will doing a road show with TV-Bay where I will be talking twice a day about two different topics. One about the importance of current technology and how it can help and hinder us and a second talk which is more of a motivational one. It’s free and you need to register for it. 1. I feel like the 1DC was sort of ahead of it’s time in one respect, but behind the times in others. If more people were demanding 4K footage that could be turned around quickly, it would have it’s uses. But that doesn’t seem to be the case. At the same time, it’s 1080 image is outclassed by the likes of the BMCC and Canon cameras with the RAW hack.

Canon should give it official RAW support, that way it would really be the most versatile DSLR in the Canon lineup. At the end of the day, it still can do stuff that no other camera can do.

  2. Hi Philip, I was in one of those long queues! Unfortunately I was too late so trying to catch up on it here. The video doesn’t want to play for some reason and says the content has been removed? Has anyone else been having the same problems? Thanks.

  3. Watched your whole 45 min video, you come across like such a nice bloke, very professional , an inspiration and education to all inspiring film makers , you are being admired by all new a future film makers .
