Hi Phillip,
My name is Scott Strimple and I am working with a group of artists to produce a full length feature film to be shot in and around Richmond Virginia. We are a small video production company and have limited manpower. Since we envision us being tasked with more producing and directing roles we are actively seeking candidates for DPing this project. We own Sony EX1 equipment and are still deciding if we want to purchase the 35mm film adapter or if we are going to go the path of leasing a RED for this project. Can you let me know if 1) you have any interest at all in further discussion 2) what would be our next step in that process assuming you do have some interest. I will be in Austin attending re:frame this April and look forward to meeting you at that time, however we are trying to get some idea of the “players” list for this project as soon as we can. Thanks so much for your consideration and look forward to meeting you in Austin.
Scott Strimple
Hey Scott,
Just wanted to say how i used to live about 5 minutes away from richmond, that probably doesn’t mean anything to you. If I can give any advice I would say that if you guys are not skilled a cinematography the ex1 and a 35mm adapter, (recomend cinemek) might not be powerful enough. I advise leading a red one and a lot of other pro equipment, like a good steadicam and crane. that’s 2 cents
I wouln’t use either, Scott. 35mm DOF adapters on fixed lens camcorders like th EX1 are so passe… why bother with that old technology today, when you can see what amazing footage a truly inexpensive DLSR can shoot for you? I would never shoot anything with a 1/2-inchs ensor camcorder, but that’s just me. You need at least a 2/3-inch sized sensor.
Unfortunately, shooting with the Red One camera means that you are entering one of, if not the most complex and expensive post oproduction workflow available. Shooting with the Red may double your post budget, although the post houses that still handle Red proejcts will love you.
I REALLY wouldn’t discount DOF adaptors…as much as I love my 5dmkII. Read this article… http://philipbloom.co.uk/2009/05/24/video-dslrs-the-death-of-35mm-adaptors/
Workflow is hellish, problems recording sound. Rolling shutter from hell. Not accepted by HD broadcasters.
Also nothing wrong the 1/2″ sensors. The EX1/3 are still amazing cameras and my number one choice when shooting HD. Sure 2/3″ is better but nothing wrong with 1/2″.
Hey Phil… thanks for the insight! See ya at RF 09 we can talk more about this project if you like there.
Mr.Bloom,
I am a film student at Columbia College Chicago and to help counter cost another student and myself are going to start shooting weddings. I read your blog on lenses and I appreciate the time you took to write that it helped me a lot in my decision. My question is because we can only film for up to 12 minutes at a time we were looking at purchasing Canon consumer camera VIXIA HF S21 to get a single angle of the whole wedding for the whole wedding cut and then we will be using a 7D and a 5D for all of are close-ups and othe angels for the best of edit for the couple. Was wondering if this is smart or for the price of the handy cam get another 7D or a T2i with some prime lenses.
Hay Philip,
Would love to know when your coming to Australia, Gold Coast? – I am looking forward to meeting you man ! Really wanna come to one of your courses ..
Kind Regards,
Michael
you missed me last time. hope to come back in March
