Flash doesn’t work on iphones. Big problem as the decent video hosting sites are all flash. Heck, my own site is all flash!
Well all know Youtube is iphone friendly, but there is some much junk of there! Vimeo, the premiere HD video sharing site, has just announced the start of iphone support. First off they have encoded staff picks and the HD channel into MP4 friendly versions. Next up will be Vimeo Plus users get it and then we will have an app.
Vimeo announced it on CNET today…with my little “San Francisco’s People” featured.
It looks great on the iphone. To see it copy and paste (or just clink this link to see it) http://vimeo.com/m/#/7260115
Here are some iphone screen grabs from it….I have to say it looks bloody awesome and when we can download videos directly from it even better!!

November 12, 2009 at 01:21It also works on Android phones. It has a bit of a problem with the popup login window, but after you get past that it looks good and the video is smooth too.
I need to test it with Nokia Symbian phones too, since they are able to playback that MP4 format without sweating too.

November 12, 2009 at 01:29Ok, the Symbian phones don’t seem to work properly. They open the mobile page, but the CSS doesn’t load and consequently the “play” button doesn’t appear. I will try to do a bug report with Vimeo about this, since many Europeans have such Symbian phones, and besides, these phones are able to playback that video format easily.

November 12, 2009 at 14:11tested this on my iphone, went to http://vimeo.com/7260115, page comes up ok but the mimetype may not be set correctly because all I get is the cartoon swearing (encoded video being seen as plaintext). Will be happy to retest when it’s fixed.

November 12, 2009 at 20:15With Apple and Adobe not playing nice over Flash support I was worried we would never get Vimeo on the iPhone so this is excellent news indeed. Picture and sound seem just as good as stuff I have downloaded and re-encoded.
I watched San Francisco’s People again and another I picked at random off the list called “the restless debt of third world beauty” which is well worth a look.

November 13, 2009 at 00:08Works great on the T-Mobile MyTouch G3 as well (Google phone w/ Android operating system). I don’t see any way to search the videos though. Hopefully that is in the works.

November 13, 2009 at 00:38Is it just me or can you not search for videos?

November 13, 2009 at 17:52So THIS is why Vimeo playback has been jerky for the last couple weeks. Their techs have been “otherwise occupied”.
